by Freddy Wagner Special to The Herald Charlie Givens' long awaited homecoming game ended with a convincing 83-50 victory for his Elkton basketball squad on Friday night. The Elks looked dominant all night, scoring the game’s first 17 points with relative ease as they cruised by Perryville. The Panthers couldn’t muster up a single point until late in the first quarter, finding themselves trailing by a 24-4 deficit going into the second quarter.
Perryville head coach Chris Johnson attributed the loss to their struggles early in the game. “We had tough luck hitting shots [in the first quarter]. Falling behind early hurt us.” Elkton made their presence felt inside the paint, physically out matching their opponent on the glass and converting consistently with layups and drives. They scored all but six of their 41 first half points in the paint or on the free throw line. Perryville never gave up, however. The Panthers began to find their stride as the game went on, capped an electric third quarter that saw both teams score 21 points, often on back to back possessions. Johnson was optimistic about his team after the loss. “I was really proud of the way we came back; we fought back and played hard. . . overall, I’m disappointed that the kids lost, but I think we can build off of this.” The Elks were propelled by strong performances from guard tandem Jah'mear Triplett (17 points) and Raiquon Estep (14 points). Perryville guard Billy Boyer led the way for his team in the losing effort, posting 13 points. Comments are closed.
