Emma Coggins capped off a hat trick by tallying the game-tying goal a split second before the end of regulation and adding the game-winner in double overtime to lift the Perryville field hockey team to a 4-3 triumph over visiting Elkton Monday, September 25. Coggins flipped the ball into the cage on a reverse sweep with 1:12 left in the second overtime period.
"I don't even know what to say. It happened so fast," she said. "I just saw the ball and I didn't want tot let the other girl to get it. I was really on the verge of tears. I was trying not to cry the entire time. I think I just got lucky, honestly. I got low and it was right there so I took it." Despite dominating possession, Perryville trailed for most of the game and was behind 3-1 entering the final five minutes. "We were frustrated because we couldn't really pinpoint what exactly our problem was," Coggins said. "It wasn't really something we could just say and then go out there and do. It was just we were all a little overwhelmed by everything that was going on. But we never stopped pushing and I think that's how we came through." Nadia Makach scored with 4:50 to go to bring the Panthers within a goal. Then with the final seconds winding down, Coggins scored from the side of the cage with the ball going into the goal a fraction of a second before the buzzer. "I don't even think we realized there was barely any time left," said Coggins. "I think once you get into a game like that and things get tight and things get intense you just see the ball and you run after it no matter what. So we didn't even realize it. It caught us off guard but it definitely encouraged us that even if there's five seconds left in a game, we're still capable of everything." Vanessa Dunn, Maia Giafes, and Hannah Moore scored for Elkton. Coggins says the Panthers learned a valuable lesson. "Give us encouragement to play to the buzzer, play to the whistle," she said. "It doesn't matter how much time is left. If you've got it and you're capable of doing it, you can take the game in the last second." Comments are closed.
