Chesapeake City gained the upper hand in the Little League Maryland District 5 Major Division baseball tournament by blanking North East 8-0 Monday night, July 9. Truman Auwerda and Chris Harris combined for a one-hit shutout. Auwerda whiffed 12 in 5 2/3 innings of work before reaching his pitch limit. Harris finished by fanning the final batter.
Chesapeake City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Deaven Jones was hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch. North East's Evan England struck out the next two batters before Jones advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch. Chesapeake City added a run in the second. Harris was hit by a pitch and Ben Matthews reached on an error. Matt Cooper contributed an RBI single to right to plate Harris. Chesapeake City began breaking the game open by tallying three times in the third. With the bases loaded, Andrew Connolley bounced a two-run single to left and another run scored on an error on the play. Ahead 5-0 Chesapeake City tacked on another run in the fourth on a truly bizarre play. With a runner on base, Mike Downes drilled a line drive just inside the left field foul line to knock in a run. Thinking it was a foul ball, Downes did not run initially before rounding first and heading to second. When the ball got away, Downes sprinted toward third. Another errant North East throw enabled Downes to cross the plate. However, North East appealed and claimed Downes failed to touch the second base bag, and he was ruled out. Up 6-0, Chesapeake City added two runs in the fifth. Connolley doubled and scored on a bloop single by Michael Preske. Jones, who was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game, eventually scored on a fielder's choice. Luke Keefer had the lone North East hit with two outs in the top of the first. With the win, Chesapeake City advances to Thursday night's title game. Elkton and Rising Sun meet Tuesday night at 7. The winner of that contest takes on North East Wednesday. The team able to emerge from the losers bracket will need to post two straight victories over Chesapeake City to take the title. Led by the pitching of Auwerda, Chesapeake City has allowed just one run over its three tournament games and has outscored its opponents a combined 32-1. Comments are closed.
