Rising Sun rallied from an 8-2 deficit to down Elkton 9-8 in a Little League Maryland District 5 Senior Division softball elimination game Friday in Havre de Grace. Cierra Young's two-run homer in the bottom of the third put Elkton ahead 8-2. Rising Sun narrowed the gap to one with five runs in the fifth. Courtney Spangler and Kerry O'Neill reached on consecutive bunts and Liz Hayden's sacrifice fly made it 8-7.
Elkton got its leadoff hitter aboard in the bottom half but was cut down trying to steal second by the catcher Spangler and shortstop Kaylie Linman. Elkton turned a 6-3-5 double play in the top of the sixth but Rising Sun put together a two-out rally. Kara Brown drew a walk and went to second on a wild pitch. Katie Main fouled off a couple of two-strike pitches before tying the game with a single to right. After she advanced to second, Spangler smacked an RBI double over the head over the Elkton third baseman to plate the go-ahead run. Winning pitcher Kristin Vandyke got out of a two-on, two-out jam in the sixth and retired Elkton in order in the seventh. Elkton had stormed out to a 6-0 lead after two innings of play. Kate Shrewsbury blasted a two-run homer to center in the first. In the second, Maggie Biddle lined a two-run triple to right-center and scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Shrewsbury doubled and scored on Lexie Barclay's RBI single. Rising Sun tallied twice in the third as Mackenzie Goldsmith and Brown each walked with the bases loaded. Young's roundtripper extended the lead back to six before Rising Sun mounted a big comeback to stay alive in the tournament. Rising Sun plays Havre de Grace Saturday at 2 p.m. Comments are closed.
