Perryville and Rising Sun posted first round wins as the Little League Maryland District 5 softball tournament got underway Sunday in North East. In the second contest of the day, Perryville nipped Chesapeake City 2-1 in a well-played game. With the game tied 1-1, Perryville scored the go-ahead run in the home half of the fourth. After an out, two errors put runners on first and second. Abby England hit a popup toward the second baseman. The infield fly rule was called so England is automatically out but the runners are permitted to advance depending on the what happens next. The ball fell safely just behind the second baseman and the go-ahead run scored.
After Chesapeake City's Madison Feeney singled to start the top of the fifth, Hannah Gordon came on to replace Perryville starter Abbie James. Gordon retired the next two hitters before Alaina Sliker reached on an error to put runners on the corner. Gordon got out of the jam by inducing a routine grounder to third. Chesapeake City threatened again in the top of the sixth. Arianna Frey lined a one-out single to right, moved to second on a groundout to the first baseman, and stole third base. Madison Fleming hit a humpback liner toward the shortstop Grace Stevens. Stevens fielded the ball cleanly and fired to first for what appeared to be the final out and Perryville started to celebrate. However, the base umpire initially ruled that the Perryville first baseman took her foot off the bag prematurely and Chesapeake City believed it had tied the game. But after a consultation between the base umpire and home plate umpire, it was ruled the batter was out and the game was over. The game was a pitcher's duel between the Perryville duo and Chesapeake City's Emily Heath. Perryville took a 1-0 lead in the first. Gordon singled, went to second on a passed ball, and scored on England's RBI single up the middle. Chesapeake City tied it in the top of the fourth when Frey drilled a clutch two-out RBI double to left center. In the first game of the day, Rising Sun scored 18 runs in the bottom of the third to down Havre de Grace 19-0 in four innings. Winning pitcher Cassidy Hayden had three hits and four RBIs in the inning. She ripped a two-run double down the left field line to make it 4-0. Julia Forsmark later added a three-run double to up the advantage to 10-0. Madison Perry knocked in two runs in the inning and pitched a scoreless frame to end the game. Taylore Brown plated the game's first run with a two-out single in the second. Comments are closed.
