The Perryville boys basketball team suffered a pair of losses last week to even its record at 2-2. Bel Air dealt the host Panthers a 70-55 setback Thursday night. Ahead 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Bobcats pulled away for good just before halftime. The Panthers, playing without starting point guard Tony Smith, trailed by as many as 10 points midway through the second quarter before rallying to get within four on two free throws by Tyrell Hollingsworth with 1:49 left before halftime.
But Bel Air responded with three straight baskets – two by Austin Tredinnick and one by Tom Keller – to take a 34-24 lead into intermission. "We became out of sync in the second quarter," Perryville coach Charles Givens said. "They made six points at the end of the second quarter and we never recovered." Bel Air didn't shoot lights out against the Panthers' zone defense, but consistently beat the hosts to the long rebounds that result from missed outside shots. "We struggled rebounding," said Givens. "We didn't have the hustle, the effort." Bel Air led 47-37 at the end of the third quarter and then broke the game open when the Panthers went to a man-to-man defense in a last ditch effort to get back into the game. Tyrell Hollingsworth had 19 points for Perryville and Elijah Johnson added 18. No other Panther reached double figures. Fallston topped the Panthers 75-62 Tuesday, December 17. Hollingsworth collected 25 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals. Smith supplied 13 points and Johnson finished with 12. Comments are closed.
