Perryville boys basketball team is ready to take on Harford county after their 48-40 win over Bo Manor's Eagles on January 11. "We played well enough to win, we do just enough to win. Bo Manor played very well in the first half. I thought they were going to run out of the gym with us, they didn't. We stayed close (within) one point," said Perryville head coach Charles Givens. At the start of the game both Perryville and Bo Manor battled to take the lead. The Panthers scored ten points in the first and the Eagles scored eight. They were behind by three until Anthony Pompilli scored a three point basket, which pulled them ahead by one at the end of the first. The Eagles scored a total of 15 points and Perryille only scored 14, which allowed them to have a two point advantage at the half. Bo Manor fell apart in the third by not moving the ball, then Perryville's Dwayne Anderson took possession. "We adjusted at half time by taking away their outside shots, and our kids just pressed on them a little more," said Givens. "I give credit to Anderson. He came in and took the ball inside their zone, and that sort of got us a little leeway there that we were able to play with for the rest of the game." The Eagles head coach Sandy Grimes was disappointed by how his team fell apart in the second half. "In the first half, we got to the free throw line a bunch of times by moving the ball, getting it inside a couple drives, and I thought in the third quarter we settled and shot a little too quick," said Grimes. "When we're successful by getting a couple ball rotations, and once in a while make five, six passes, and when we do that, we get a drive or a wide open three that is off a good catch, not rushed and not after two passes, we know it but we lose track," said Grimes. Bo Manor was trailing Perryville by five in the fourth after the Eagles Malik Allen scored a three pointer. The Panthers were able to keep their lead when Dom Gugliotta added four free throws. "We're playing really well defensively right now. We still continue to start out slow. It would be nice to get up on the teams early, but if we continue to close it out it really doesn't matter," said Gugliotta. "We knew we had a lot of games in the upcoming weeks. We are just taking care of our business inside the county, and just got to take care of this momentum and try and get some Harford county teams," he added. Perryville's top players were Treshawn Warren who scored 14 points, Dennis Johnson scored 12, and Gugliotta added six points. Bo Manor's Johnny Knight scored 11 points, made two turnovers and two steals. Pompili made six rebounds and four turnovers. Cameron Garcia added six points and had eight turnovers, made four rebounds as well as four assists. Their defense and their thirst for a win aided in their victory. "We said in the very beginning that we would be competitive. Thus far I think we have been. We took over in the county because we have beaten everybody except for Elkton, and we only lost to them by four, so at least the first time around it proves that we are competitive," said Givens. "So now we need to go to Harford county, in which we'll be seeing a series of (games) and find out how competitive we are," he added. Comments are closed.
