North East boys basketball team triumphed over Perryville 70-61 on January 31, avenging the Indians' loss to the Panthers at the start of the season. The Indians captured a four point lead after Danny Leek added three 3-pointers in the first and Chase Hollister made all four of his free throws in the second. The Panthers held on after two baskets and a three point shot from Nick Roberts. Dom Gugliotta's last three pointer brought the Panthers within four points of North East bringing the score to 34-30 at the half. "We put in a game plan these last couple of nights and tried to be a little disruptive and not be as predictable as we have been in the past. So we did change up our defense some," said North East head coach Alan Foskey. North East's Kobie Matthews obtained a steal and made a basket with about three minutes left in the third giving the Indians a two point lead. With a three pointer, Roberts brought the Panthers within a point of the Indians. With only two seconds left, the Indian's Leek scored a three pointer giving them a 51-42 lead at the end of the third.
"After the half I was thinking we got this game. We came out strong and got it done. I think everyone played really well as a team, " said Leek. "Payton Hoskins gets a big three from the side, Kevin Wimbs comes in plays real well. Chase Hollister crashes the board well and makes his free throws. Its all these little things that add up to a big thing," said Foskey. "We were more successful in attatcking the basket in the free throw line and once we were able to beat their press, we ran the floor pretty well." The Panthers attempted to whittle down the deficit with two baskets and a three from Dennis Johnson but North East was able to capitalize on needed free throws and outscored Perryville 19-18 in the fourth, giving the Indians the win. "We self-destructed a lot of times when we were making a run and in the first half we missed ten (free throws)," said Perryville head coach Charles Givens. "North East played well and I thought we did well over all, particularly our two seniors who have been here for four years. They scored 39 of the points. Nick Roberts, he played well, Gugliotta did too." The Indians, Leek racked up twenty points and made three steals. Nasir Williams scored 18 points, made six rebounds, and two steals. Matthews added 11 points and had three rebounds and three assists. Tim Webster made seven rebounds. For the Panthers, Roberts scored 24 points, made four rebounds, and three steals. Gugliotta added 15 points, made two rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Duane Anderson scored five points, made four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
