The Rising Sun baseball team (12-1) suffered its first loss of the season Friday in dramatic fashion. North Harford's Nic Hammer blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the 14th inning to propel the Hawks to a 10-9 triumph. It was the continuation of a game that began at North Harford March 31 and was halted by darkness with the score tied at 7 after nine innings. The Tigers had tallied twice in the top of the 14th on an RBI infield hit by Zach Van Dyke and a bases-loaded walk to Will Barton. Sean Goodie led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Jared Hoag. With Hoag running, Dan Willert drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. The North Harford catcher mistakenly threw down to second and the ball sailed into centerfield allowing Hoag to race to third.
Van Dyke hit a chopper up the third base line. The North Harford third baseman fielded the ball cleanly, but elected not to try for an out at the plate, and threw late in an attempt to get Van Dyke. Jake Bower laid down a sacrifice bunt and was safe on an error to load the bases. After a pop up for the first out, Nick Luciano bunted but Willert was forced at the plate. Barton then walked to make it 9-7. A one-out hit and a walk set the table for Hammer, who drilled a shot over the left field fence to end the game. North Harford nearly won the game in the 13th. The Hawks had the bases loaded with one out but the Tigers' Dan Richardson struck out each of the next two batters on 3-2 pitches. The regularly-scheduled game was postponed in the bottom of the third with the Hawks holding a 4-2 advantage. An umpire was injured forcing play to be halted just before a steady rain hit. Trailing 2-0, the Tigers tallied twice in the home half of the first. Dan Willert reached on an infield hit and eventually scored on a bloop double to shallow left by Tommy Stover. The North Harford shortstop was unable to make a lunging grab and the ball caromed off his glove, into foul territory, and out of play. Adam Janney drilled an RBI triple to right-center to plate Stover. The Tigers and Hawks are tied atop the Chesapeake Division standings. Comments are closed.
