The Elks are ready to slide into the new season. Coming off a 7-12 season last year, Elkton's baseball team is determined to do better in 2017. "If we see vast improvement from game one to game eight then we've completed the task," said head coach Steve Smith. The team has eight returning varsity players this year. That's a good thing, for the team to build on basics from last year. Of those returnees are Nick Gregson, Kyle Spencer, and Evan Spencer. Gregson will be a starter for the Elks, either on the mound or at first base. Kyle Spencer will be at short stop. Evan Spencer will be key at second base. "A lot of (our) talent is spread out all over the field, (there is) infield depth, (and) flexible players," said Smith. Freshman Austin Oliver will be a universal player for the team as well. Coach Smith said that having him on varsity will help to create additional depth now, and build a foundation for the future. "The skies the limit," he said. While Elkton's team is strong, the North East baseball team is fairly young. The Indians were 11-9 last year and head coach Kevin Brown is looking for the entire team to improve this year.
"We would like to go deeper in the play-offs than we did last year," said head coach Kevin Brown. Key players for this season are Cameron Blankenship who is the teams starting pitcher. "He had a great year behind the plate and did well for us on the mound. Backing him up behind the plate is sophomore Pat O'Brian. Starting first baseman will be Tyler Robinson. Payton Hoskins will play second base but may also see time on the mound. Chase Hollister is another back up pitcher and universal infielder. Colt Price will be the team's starting shortstop. While the Indians core is full of juniors, Bo Manor's Eagles are full of experience. After a 16-4 season last year, the Eagles are ready for the road to the playoffs. "We are going to be competitive in each game and improve and prepare for the playoffs," said head coach Gary Johnson. "I feel that our defense is strong and we have quite a few key players, we should be good." The team will has a new sophomore catcher this year and Johnson believes he is ready to step in and play at the varsity level. While Bo Manor has a strong complement of players, Rising Sun has young talent. At Perryville High, the Panthers have four returning starters, Zac Stray - pitcher, Mike Newsome is expected to be a solid and first and bring strength to the batter's box. Charles Cummings will pitch and see time in most any position. Comments are closed.
