PHOTOS: Rising Sun volleyball rallies from big deficit to down Perryville in five-set thriller9/20/2018
The other thing hotter than the Rising Sun gym was the competition on the volleyball court.
Playing in front of a boisterous, enthusiastic crowd, the Tigers roared back from two sets down to upend Perryville in a battle of perennial state title contenders Tuesday night, September 18. The Perryville volleyball team topped C. Milton Wright 25-12, 25-9, 25-9 Tuesday afternoon, September 11.
Rebecca Holman supplied seven kills and five aces. Alex Leslie and Gracey Stevens each collected five kills and three aces. Jordan Carr contributed 19 assists and four aces. With a relatively young team, Rising Sun volleyball coach Rich Wilson wasn't sure what to expect from his squad this season.
Even after a lopsided season-opening victory over Patterson Mill Thursday, September 6, Wilson remains uncertain how good the Rising Sun can become. The Tigers served a whopping 35 aces and trounced the host Huskies 25-7, 25-3, 25-3. They say a leopard can't change its spots.
One particular group of big cats has no intention of doing so. The Smithsburg Leopards continued their mastery of 1A volleyball by sweeping Perryville 25-11, 25-18, 25-22 in the state title match Saturday at Ritchie Coliseum in College Park. The Perryville volleyball team served up a shockingly lopsided 25-4, 25-7, 25-15 triumph over Frederick Douglass in the state semifinals Wednesday night in College Park.
The Panthers posted a whopping 29 saves – 14 by libero Hailey Jones. After scoring the first point of the match on a sideout, Jones served 16 straight points to put the Panthers ahead 17-0. The Rising Sun volleyball team lost to La Plata in the state semifinals Monday night, November 13, at Ritchie Coliseum in College Park.
The Warriors prevailed 25-23, 26-24, 25-20. The Perryville volleyball team captured its seventh straight region title Friday by sweeping North Dorchester 25-8, 25-12, 25-12.
It was the 11th region crown in program history for the Panthers who are seeking their first state title. Perryville will face Frederick Douglass in the state semifinals Wednesday at the University of Maryland's Ritchie Coliseum at 8 p.m. In Friday's region title match, Rebecca Holman had 12 kills and six blocks. Hailey Jones added six aces and four digs. Jordan Carr recorded 19 assists, five digs, three aces, and three blocks. Brooke Reynolds registered five aces, four digs, two kills, two blocks, and two assists. Liz Zatalava rolled into last year's volleyball region title game in a wheelchair after undergoing surgery that day to repair her knee.
Friday night, Zatalava strolled out a region champion after contributing to Rising Sun's 25-15, 25-20, 25-9 victory over visiting Queen Anne's. Faced with adversity, the Perryville volleyball team turned to a trio of seniors who had been in similar situations.
Coach Matt Borrelli credited his captains with steadying the ship after the Panthers dropped the first game against Bohemia Manor Wednesday and then the leaders helped Perryville withstand a furious Eagles rally in game four. The result was a 17-25, 26-24, 25-16, 25-22 Panthers victory in a region semifinal game in Chesapeake City. The undefeated Rising Sun volleyball team opened the playoffs with a 25-13, 24-10, 25-7 triumph over North East Monday, November 6.
