Tennis has finally become Mallory Tiffin's main sport.
Tiffin first started playing on the Rising Sun High School team as a way to stay in condition for the field hockey season. She got so good at it she's going to play in college. Tiffin recently signed a letter of intent to attend Waynesburg (Pa.) University. The Rising Sun tennis team improved to 13-0 on the season with an 8-3 triumph over visiting Harford Tech Monday.
The Tigers swept the five boys matches. Two of the three boys singles matches were decided by a third set super tiebreaker. The Rising Sun duo of Jake Vincent and Evan Holbrook advanced to the district tournament by placing second in the Susquehanna Division tournament.
The Rising Sun tennis team defeated host Perryville 9-2 Tuesday. The Tigers swept all five doubles matches. On the boys side, Danny Hanzelka/Luke Timcik topped Adam Strakna/Kyle Ciaccia 6-1, 6-4. Nick Holtman/Zach Alexander defeated Steven Lynch/Robbie James 6-7, (6-8), 6-1, 10-6. The Perryville tennis team defeated North East 8-3 Monday, March 24.
The Panthers swept the boys singles matches. Number one Josh Sinclair pulled out a 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 victory. Number two Trevor Fell and number three Ben Brickner each won in straight sets. The Perryville tennis team dropped a 6-5 decision to visiting Havre de Grace Friday.
Emily James and Alennah Howell recorded singles wins for the Panthers. Adam Straka and Malik Peary, Kyle Ciaccia and Robbie James, and Sammie Von Staden and Matt Rovine teamed up for doubles wins. The Rising Sun tennis team will see some new faces this year.
The Tigers will be in the Susquehanna Division after falling out of the Chesapeake. "We're looking forward to playing teams we haven't played before," coach Larry Sickels said. "As a team we definitely want to increase the win total from last year and think we have a good chance of being at or near the top of the Susquehanna Division by the end of the season. As far as individuals are concerned, we want to place as many singles players and doubles teams into regionals as possible." |
