The Rising Sun wrestling team opened the season with a 50-27 victory over visiting North Harford Thursday evening.
Joe Juergens (132), Tyler Jones (152), Will Barton (170), and Trevor Roland (113) each recorded a pin for the Tigers. Nelson Phillips (160) won by tech fall. Chad Johnson (138) eked out a 6-5 decision. Jack Lough (126), Max Fopponio (195), and Ryan Maes (106) each received a forfeit. It was a successful debut for Rising Sun's new coach, Ryan Lehr, the former Tiger wrestler who captured a state title in 2000. Coming off a four-win season, the Rising Sun boys basketball team is expecting a major turnaround. The Tigers will rely heavily on 6-6 senior center Brandon Aro. "His game has improved a lot from last year," Rising Sun coach Matt Haack said. "His confidence is up and he's playing more with his back to the rim. He has improved his strength and his speed and he's poised to have a real good senior season and to be our main leader on and off the court." Junior Kevin Alkinburg, who spent most of last season on the JV team, is expected to team with Aro to form an imposing duo. "We're hoping he and Aro can be a big 1-2 threat on both the offensive and defensive end," said Haack. The coach said the 6-6 Alkinburg has a nice touch on his midrange jumper and can block shots. After losing three starters to graduation and getting another late start because of the length of the football season, the Perryville boys basketball team is trying to come together as a team. "Basically we're putting the players we have together to be an effective unit," coach Charles Givens Sr. said. "Last year we had a group and we lost three starters. This year we have another group and we're trying to mesh them together." Junior Tyrell Hollingsworth will pace the Panthers. The silky smooth wing player is seemingly capable of driving to the basket at will. The Rising Sun girls basketball team improved dramatically last season. Despite losing seven seniors and three starters, second-year coach Kathy Stoudt expects the Tigers to take another step forward this year. Junior guard Brooke Bower averaged a little over 10 points a game last year and Stoudt said she expects her to score close to 20 a game this winter. "I'm expecting a stellar year," Stoudt said. “I think she'll be awesome." The Perryville girls basketball team is loaded with underclassmen. The Panthers have just one senior and one junior on the roster. Senior forward Bella Jones has three years of experience and serves as an outstanding leader for her younger teammates, coach Gina Pucci said. Junior point guard Krystle Schweers, came up from the JV team during last season. "She has a nice jumper and can get into the lane," Pucci said. "It's going to be interesting to see how she progresses." The Rising Sun wrestling team returns a solid nucleus.
Reigning region champion Joe Juergens (23-3 last year) and fellow state qualifier Nelson Phillips (27-14) will lead the Tigers. Juergens is expected to compete at 126 pounds with Phillips in the 145-pound weight class. The Perryville wrestling team will be led by three wrestlers with state tournament aspirations and a group of younger athletes looking to improve throughout the season. "We have a very young group," coach Whitney Middlemiss said. "We have a couple guys with solid experience but most of the team is new to wrestling." Two-time state runnerup Chris Brown is slated to begin the season at 126 pounds before moving down to the 120-pound class. |
