Who says nobody's perfect?
The Rising Sun volleyball team has been so far. The Tigers completed a second straight undefeated regular season with a sweep of host Bel Air Wednesday night. Rising Sun swept all 14 of its matches, a perfect 52-0 in sets. The Tigers also did not drop a set in winning the Bulldog Classic Invitational. The Perryville field hockey team will enter the postseason on a bit of a downer.
The Panthers suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to host North East Friday. It's often said that big players make big plays in big games.
That was certainly true in Perryville's 34-28 victory over host Havre de Grace Friday night. It's also why Perryville coach Chris Johnson did not need to agonize over his play call when his team, trailing 28-26, faced a 4th and 14 from their own 34 yard line with less than three minutes remaining in the game. The Tigers (12-0) pummeled Fallston last Wednesday on Senior Night, 25-6, 25-9, 25-11. Michael Catena was not the tallest or strongest player on the field. But no one wanted to get to the ball as badly as he did. Catena headed home the eventual game-winning goal with less than nine minutes left in regulation to lift the Rising Sun boys soccer team to a 4-3 comeback victory over visiting North East on Senior Night Tuesday, October 14. "I saw the ball coming," Catena said. "I knew I had to get my head on it. It was all or nothing. You only have one chance so you better make it happen." The Perryville girls captured the county cross country meet by the slimmest of margins Tuesday, October 14 at Bohemia Manor High.
Each team's top five finishers are counted in the team score. With the first five Panther and Eagle runners counted, the two schools were tied at 39. The winner is then determined by which team's sixth runner finishes ahead of the other's sixth runner. The Perryville girls soccer team lost 6-2 to visiting Elkton Monday, October 13.
Tori Antoshak scored the Panthers' goal in the first half after her team had fallen behind 3-0. Maddie Litwin had the assist. Sam Koons headed in a pass from Antoshak for the other Perryville goal. The Perryville volleyball team topped visiting Patterson Mill 3-1 Monday night, October 13.
The Panthers prevailed 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19. |
