Verna Mae Murphy, of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community and formerly of Drumore, where she served as Postmaster for over 31 years, died on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. She was 88. Mrs. Murphy was born in Bird-In-Hand, daughter of the late Enos and Bertha Petery Kellenberger. Her husband C. Meryl Murphy died in 1994. She led an active life, after graduating high school she worked as a secretary for the Manheim Township School District. In later years she, along with her husband owned and operated the Fishing Creek and Peach Bottom Marinas from 1951 to 1969 and then went on to serve as Postmaster of the Drumore Post Office. Mrs. Murphy was a member of Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, Soroptimist International, Kings Daughters, NAPUS, Valley Lea Riding Club and Wilmar Hunting Club. She loved all water activities along with reading, knitting, sending cards and wintering in Florida.
She is survived by sons; Charles M. husband of Sandy, of Willow Street, Stephen L. husband of Susan, of Drumore, Michael M. husband of Candace, of Drumore and a daughter, Christine M. wife of Mike Robinson, of Downingtown; nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren Services celebrating Verna Mae's life will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014, at 7 p.m. from Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Drive. Friends can visit with the family one hour prior to the service and also immediately following the service. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church Building Fund. Arrangements handled by Dewald Funeral & Cremation services in Quarryville.
