Thomas W. Ferguson Jr. of Street Rd., Kirkwood, died at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. He was 88. Mr. Ferguson was born in Kirkwood, a son of the late T. Walter and Zeeda Hess Ferguson. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer John R. Pierce. The ship saw duty in the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans and was the first to send its crew ashore on liberty at Hiroshima and Nagaski, Japan. During his time in the Navy, he traveled more than 61,0000 miles. He was a farmer in Colerain Township and, for 35 years, was the rural mail carrier for the Kirkwood Post Office. Mr. Ferguson was a lifetime member of Union Presbyterian Church, Kirkwood, where he served as a trustee. He was also active with the Ground Zero Youth Group.
He was also a member of the Oxford V.F.W. Mr. Ferguson enjoyed hunting and country music. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jane Sprout Ferguson; his son, Dr. T. Joseph, husband of Laurie Ferguson of Escondido, Calif.; four grandsons, Sam Ferguson of Maryland, Scout Ferguson of California, Skyler Ferguson of California, and Zane Ferguson of California; two siblings, Evelyn Ohrel and the Rev. John L., husband of Valaria Ferguson; and his cousin and good friend, Susan, wife of Dr. Joseph Glass. A daughter, Kathleen Ferguson; and three siblings, Aileen Sill, Alma Jackson, and Louis Ferguson, are deceased. Friends may call at Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Street Rd., Kirkwood, from 6 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 20. Services will be held from the church at 7 p.m. on that date with Pastor Blake Deilber officiating. Private burial will be in Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ground Zero Youth Group in care of Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Street Rd., Kirkwood PA 17536.
