Robert A. Eberly of Reading died at Reading Hospital on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. He was 86. Mr. Eberly was a son of the late John J. and Laura K. Meck Eberly. He lived in Quarryville before moving to Reading. He grew up on the family farm in Camargo and attended the nearby one-room school. He was a graduate of Quarryville High School. Mr. Eberly worked for an electrical contractor before serving with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After the war, he started a career with PP&L that spanned 44 years and took him to assignments in Lancaster and Berks counties. He retired in 1991.
After retiring, he devoted his energies to caring for others. He was an avid vegetable gardener who planted and maintained a massive plot and shared its bounty with others. He also helped friends maintain their properties and looked after the elderly. Mr. Eberly was a dedicated member of St. John's (Hain's) United Church of Christ, Wernersville. He served several terms on the church's consistory. He had also been a member of Washington Lodge 156, F.&A.M., Quarryville, for more than 50 years. Mr. Eberly is survived by two daughters, Cathy L. Eberly, wife of Bill Howerton of Keswick, Va., and Tina E., wife of Larry Kissell of Biscoe, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jenny Leigh Kissell, wife of Garrett Gooch of Biscoe, Andrew Eberly-Owerton of Keswick, and Aspen Kissell of Biscoe; his sister, Naomi, wife of Frank Connor or Quarryville; numerous nieces and nephews; and a wide circle of friends. His wife, Mary Shenk Eberly, is deceased. Friends may call at Zion United Church of Christ, 900 Winter Hill Rd., New Providence, from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 28. Services will be held from the church at 2 p.m. on that date. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements were made through Reynolds Funeral and Cremation Services, Quarryville.
