The Rev. Charles B. Holliday, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior May 13, 2017 at Quarryville, PA. He was born September 12, 1922 in Greenville, SC, the son of Charles B. Holliday and Belle Mundy. He is survived by Katherine Armes Holliday, his wife of almost 70 years (June 7, 1947); four children: Jean Annette Troxell (Sun City West, AZ), Charles B. Holliday, III (Atlantic Beach, FL), Katherine H. Beebe (Flourtown, PA) and Thomas G. Holliday (Alexandria, VA); 13 grandchildren and 32 living great grandchildren. His greatest joy was seeing his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren following Jesus. Rev. Holliday was a graduate of Columbia Bible College, Texas Christian University and Faith Theological Seminary. He was ordained April 1947 by the Carolina Presbytery of the Bible Presbyterian Church. He served as Pastor, Fairview Reformed Presbyterian Church Industry, PA for five years and Pastor, First R. P. Church, Pittsburgh, PA for thirty-eight yrs. He was made Pastor Emeritus by the Pittsburgh congregation and Honorably Retired by the Ascension Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) in 1992. He was well loved as a pastor for his biblical preaching and devotion to his flock. He had a faithful commitment to missions, youth work and outreach. He was known by his peers for his practical wisdom and his ability to get things done. He was often able to help strong minded leaders reconcile their differences. He served as Moderator of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, General Synod in 1950, 1957 and 1962; Moderator of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Evangelical Synod in 1977. He also served on the denominational RP Pension board, Home Missions/ Home Ministries board, Covenant Seminary board and the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community board for twenty years. For over thirty years he led the Pittsburgh Presbytery Summer Youth Camp and the Presbytery missions conference.
He and Mrs. Holliday retired to Silver Bay, NY in 1993. For many years, he preached regularly in area churches – Redeemer Reformed PCA, which became their home church, but also in Christian Reformed, United Reformed, PCUSA, OPC, Baptist and other congregations in upstate NY and Vermont. In 2015, he and Mrs. Holliday relocated to the Quarryville (PA) Presbyterian Retirement Community. He was a man of quiet strength who loved Jesus and longed for heaven. He was a man of wisdom who almost always had something valuable to say but never was accused of talking too much. A rare combination for a preacher. He will be greatly missed by all who were part of his life. A memorial service will take place in the Elllingsworth Auditorium of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, 625 Robert Fulton Hwy, Quarryville, PA on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Graveside services and interment will be private in the Chestnut Level Presbyterian Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be given to First Reformed Presbyterian Church (12900 Frankstown Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15235) or to a ministry of your choice.
