Pastor Harold E. Feerrar Jr. of Quarryville died on Wednesday, July 31, 2013. He was 87. Pastor Feerrar was born in Williamsport, a son of the late Harold E. Sr. and Bertha S. Feerrar. He was a graduate of Bob Jones University in South Carolina and accepted a temporary pastoral assignment at a church in Mechanic Grove. The six-month assignment lasted 33 years at the church, which became the Calvary Independent Church. During his tenure, a Christian school was established there. The church became known for its open air Sunday evening services. A successful businessman, he established an automobile business at Nate's Auto, Quarryville, and expanded it to routes 10 and 30 in Parkesburg, Christiana Sales in Christiana, and Dutch Pines Auto Sales and Motel. Most recently, he owned Centerville Self Storage.
He competed in fast-pitch softball leagues, pitching competitively into his 70s. He was inducted into Lancaster's American Softball Association Hall of Fame. Pastor Feerrar also played basketball until he was 85. An avid outdoorsman, he hunted in several countries. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Ann Fannin Feerrar; three sons, Harold E. 'Buddy' III, husband of Brenda Feerrar, Gene, husband of Irene Feerrar, and Ted, husband of Lisa Feerrar; his daughter, Dawn, wife of Larry Taylor; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Jane Schwanbeck of Adairsville, Ga. A sister, Virginia Dalton, is deceased. Friends called at Calvary Monument Bible Chruch, 1660 Mine Rd., Paradise, from 2:15 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 4. Services were held from the church at 4 p.m. on that date with the Rev. Dr. Robert M. Reid officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
