Lewis E. Shoemaker Jr., 93, of Kirkwood, a retired farmer and warehouse foreman was called home by his Lord and Savior on November 26, 2015. He and his wife, Colleen Hartman Shoemaker were married for more than 64 wonderful years. A dairy farmer for many years, Lewis became a foreman at the Oxford Grain and Hay Co. in Oxford from 1961 until his retirement. A life-long farmer at heart, he enjoyed coaxing delicious fruits and vegetables from his one-acre garden. Lew also enjoyed fishing and hunting deer, turkey, and small game with family and friends. He was a member of the Black Stump Hunting Camp in Potter County where the family also enjoyed many enjoyable summer vacations. In the cold winter months, Lew, Colleen, along with other family and friends migrated to St. Petersburg, Florida to escape the snow and ice. An avid Phillies fan, Lew also enjoyed cheering on the Penn State football and Duke basketball teams. An active member of Union Presbyterian Church in Kirkwood, Lew served his Savior for many years as a Sunday School teacher and Elder. He graduated from Quarryville High School in 1940. Born in East Drumore Township, he was a son of the late Lewis Sr. and Bertha DeLong Shoemaker. Lew is survived by his wife, Colleen, a son Lewis H., husband of Carrene A., three granddaughters, brother, Kenneth Shoemaker, and a sister Faye Wade (Elmer).
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard, a sister, Jean S. Hassler, and a son, Lee E. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 7:30 P.M. at Union Presbyterian Church, 5637 Street Road, Kirkwood, PA 17536 with Pastor Scott Szabo officiating. A visitation will be held at the church Tuesday evening from 6:30-7:30 P.M. A private family graveside service will be held Wednesday, with burial in Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Union Presbyterian Church.
