John Richard Zeher, 91, of Quarryville, formerly of Ocee, Fla., and Maryland, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. He was the beloved husband of Evelyn Lucile (Pope) Zeher, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. Born in Minneapolis, he was the son of the late John and Sophia (Pala) Zeher. John was a graduate of Park Avenue High School in Minnesota, class of 1946. After high school, he served in the Army and then attended St. Cloud University, earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He went on to be employed by the U.S. Treasury as a Bank Examiner, and as Director of Emergency Preparedness, retiring with 25 years of service. John then went back to college at the University of South Florida, earning a second bachelor’s degree in Gerontology. For John, God was always first, then his wife and children, then his work. A top priority was long summer vacations of camping across the country or at the beach. He faithfully cared for his wife, Evelyn, for 30 years after she suffered a debilitating brain aneurism at age 54.
John had many passions. His passion for adventure, led him to travel the United States with Evelyn in their motor home for six years after he retired. He was also a passionate lifetime learner, which led him to go back to college after retirement and inspired his collection of sermons by reformed theologians. Most importantly John was a man with strong Christian convictions. He was passionate about learning God’s word, which was his rule for faith and life. He was a faithful witness to Christ by sharing his strong beliefs with those around him. After moving to Quarryville, he enjoyed serving as a volunteer for Release Time, an after-school program that teaches children the Bible. He also regularly gifted Christian CD’s and books to his children and grandchildren, creating a legacy of sharing Christ with his family. He remembered the birthdays of family members and friends throughout the years and was known for sending cards to those he loved. John was an active member of Lake Sherwood Orthodox Presbyterian Church of Orlando, FL and attended Westminster Presbyterian while at Quarryville. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Michael and wife Martha, of Marriottsville, MD, Bradley and wife Charlene, of Chino Hills, CA, Andrew, of Everett, WA, and Martin and wife Brenda, of Westminster, MD, and a daughter, Victoria Travis and husband Thomas, of Port Republic, MD. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 sisters. A Memorial Service will be held at a future date due to current COVID-19 public gathering prohibitions. Because of John’s love for education, it was his wish to be a donor for Humanity Gifts Registry at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in John’s memory to Lake Sherwood Orthodox Presbyterian Church at 8200 Balboa Dr. Orlando, FL 32818 or Ligonier Ministries at www.ligonier.org.
