John A. Burkins, 87, entered into rest on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Brethren Village, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Drumore on September 29, 1927, he was a son of the late J. Andrew and Ruth N. (Boyd) Burkins. Surviving is his wife of 50 years, Jeanne (Herr) (Finefrock) Burkins and 6 children: Harry, Dr. J. Andrew, Jr., Michael, Jan Hastings, Jonathan and Kenneth; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dr. Etta Miller. Mr. Burkins graduated from Drumore and Solanco High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII while being stationed in Japan. Upon discharge, he entered college at Franklin & Marshall and received his Masters Degree in Education from Temple University and then received additional credits at the University of Maryland. John was a teacher and administrator in Pennsylvania and Maryland schools for 33 years. He served on the Solanco school board and while in Maryland was elected president of Cecil County Principal’s Association and was named “Principal of the Year” in 1977. Mr. Burkins was a member of St. Paul’s Church in Quarryville, where he served on consistory and taught adult Sunday school. He had been active in the former Quarryville Rotary Club and the former Tucquan Lions Club, serving at the cabinet level. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow. John chaired the Solanco Fair Parade, volunteered at the Quarryville Library and the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. His favorite hobby was driving, buying, or selling cars, which he did while being a notary at Dutch Pine Auto or Willow Street Auto Auction. His smile, blue eyes and special sense of humor will be missed by all.
Funeral Services will take place at St. Paul’s Church, 1 W. 4th St., Quarryville, PA on Monday, September 14, 2015 at 11:00 AM. There will be a viewing at the church from 10-11 AM. Interment will follow in the Chestnut Level Presbyterian Cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.
