James D. “Jim” Lowe, 81, of Quarryville, formerly of Lancaster, passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. He was the loving husband of the late Nancy (Gibson) Lowe, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2019. Born in Hamilton, Montana, he was the son of the late James Ernest and Elizabeth Margaret (Thompson) Lowe. Jim was a graduate of Renton High School in Renton, Washington, class of 1959. Soon after graduation, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving for 8 years, earning the rank of Hospital Corpsman, Third Class. He then went on to be employed by Service America Food Vending Company (now Canteen) as a route driver, retiring in 2005 with 35 years of service. In his younger days, Jim was quite a sportsman, playing any sport that used a ball. He was very involved with his church, Grandview Heights United Methodist Church, where he looked forward to attending Sunday School and singing in the choir. Jim’s love of singing led him to be a member of the Red Rose Barbershop Chorus for many years. Growing up on the West Coast, he was an avid follower of the Seattle Seahawks and the Seattle Mariners. In his later years, Jim dedicated his life to caring for Nancy. He loved spending time with his family and he had a hard time telling them no when they needed something.
Jim is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Shifflett, wife of James, of Quarryville; a granddaughter, Amanda Kuenzli, fiancée of Kevin Beach, of New Holland; grandsons, Michael and Jason Shifflett, both of Quarryville, and Daniel Tanner, husband of Julia, of Branson, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Rylea Kuenzli, and Gabriel and Willow Tanner; and sisters, Sandra Hughes, of Renton, Washington, and Charlene Jones, wife of Larry, of Centralia, Washington. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Virginia Lee Larsen. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 4, 2022 at Dewald Funeral & Cremation Services, 227 West 4th Street, Quarryville, PA 17566 with a time to visit with the family from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow the service at Conestoga Memorial Park.
