Ellen I. Neff, 92, formerly of Ronks, was welcomed into her heavenly home on Thursday, September 11, 2014. She was the wife of Clarence R. Neff for over 70 years. They resided at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community for seven years. Ellen was a homemaker who was very devoted to her family. She enjoyed quilting and writing short stories and poems. Ellen also authored and had published a children’s story book. Ellen was a devout follower of Jesus. Known for her loving acceptance of people, she and Clarence graciously opened their home to others; whether to share a delicious meal or to live there when needing a place to stay. She was a member of Kinzer Mennonite Church and also the former Mount Pleasant Mennonite Church. She served as a Sunday school teacher for over 60 years and was a member of several sewing circles and enjoyed volunteering at area Re-Uzit shops.
Born in East Petersburg, Ellen was the daughter of the late Amos and Mabel (Hershey) Rutt and her late step-mother Cora (Harbold) Rutt. Ellen was raised by her Uncle Mark and Aunt Anna Hershey after the death of her mother. In addition to Clarence, she is survived by their children: C. Melvin married to Dorothy (Groff) Neff of Ronks, Ann married to Robert Eshleman of Paradise, Mabel Merk of Strasburg, Donald married to Doris (Hershey) Neff of Paradise, Clair married to Nancy (Illingworth) Neff of Landisville and Joyce married to Chris Slabaugh of Quarryville; an “adopted” daughter, Kathy married to Michael Frick of Hershey; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and a sister, Anna Mary Hershey of Landisville. She is also survived by Mark and Anna Hershey’s eight children. Ellen was preceded in death by an infant daughter in 1945, a grandson, Dustin Neff, four brothers, Mervin, Amos, Ira and Lloyd Rutt, and three sisters, Elizabeth Foreman, Erma Herr and Grace Shirk . The family would like to thank the staff at QPRC for their kindness and loving care. There will be a viewing on Monday, September 15, 2014, from 6 until 8 PM at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, 625 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, PA, and again on Tuesday, September 16 from 10 until 11 AM at Grace Point Church of Paradise, 8 South Singer Avenue, Paradise, PA. The funeral is 11 AM at the church. Interment will follow in Paradise Mennonite Cemetery.
