Donald Gordon MacLean went home to be with the Lord Saturday evening, March 26, 2016, at age 92. He passed away at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, where he had lived with his wife for over eight years. Don was born February 13, 1924, in Evanston, Illinois, where he grew up in a Christian family and welcomed Christ as his savior at age thirteen. He was the son of the late Dr. John MacLean and Willene Grant MacLean. Don graduated from Northwestern University in electrical engineering, then obtained a Master's degree from the University of Michigan. He was a professional engineer employed by DuPont at Chambers Works until his retirement, at which time he went back to work for DuPont as a contractor. Don's faith in Christ was evident in his life and activities. He was an active church member and served many years at Faith Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, DE, on the building committee, and as a deacon, trustee, and elder. More recently, he was an elder at Proclamation Presbyterian Church in Bryn Mawr, PA. After moving to Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community in 2008, he enjoyed attending Faith Presbyterian Church in Quarryville, PA, as long as he was able. Don married Dorothy Louise Smyth (Dot) in 1956. He is survived by her, a daughter, Susan (Todd) Palmer of Wilmington, DE, grandchildren Heather, William, Katie, and Megan, and a son, Scott (Ann) of Freehold, NJ, grandchildren Ian, Logan, and Matthew, as well as siblings Sara Jane MacLean, and Dr. James MacLean of Evanston, IL. He was predeceased by siblings Dr. Grant MacLean, Dr. John (Fra) MacLean, and Mary Catherine Peck.
For many years Don took pleasure in classical music, playing golf, maintaining almost everything around the house, and summer vacations on Lake of Bays, Ontario, Canada, with his extended family. Later, Williamsburg was a favorite destination. He always enjoyed making a new acquaintance or visiting with friends, family, or his home caregivers. The funeral will be Friday, April 1, at 11 a.m. at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Ellingsworth Auditorium, Mr. Timothy Krizan officiating. Visitation is thirty minutes prior to the service, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N DuPont Hwy, New Castle, DE 19720 at approximately 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Kinsman Fund, Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, 625 Robert Fulton Hwy, Quarryville, PA 17566 which benefits residents in need.
