After graduating from Lampeter High School, she worked at the former Federal Bakeshop, where her talent decorating wedding cakes, would lead to some of the best birthday cakes her kids could ever imagine. During WWII she worked at the former Hamilton Watch Co. making fuses. Later she went on to work at the former Stehli’s Silk Mill and the former RCA Corp. making TV tubes. Betty’s most important job came after she married John G. Rineer with whom she celebrated 69 years of marriage in June, and she focused her energy on being a homemaker and mother to her 3 daughters, Brenda, wife of Ted Fay of Lampeter, Cheryl Hershey of Willow Street, and Bev, wife of Jim Doughty of Strasburg; along with grandchildren: Bryan and Jen Fay, Megan Hershey, Jamie, wife of Matt Himmelberger, Katie, Lindsay and Tiffany Doughty and 3 great grandchildren; Sydney Fay, Micah and Caleb Himmelberger and a sister, Dorothy Huber as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers; Harry, Lester and Roy Winters and sisters Mary Harman, Stella Dachs, Pearl Hostetter, Mabel Hirst and Ethel Hess. Betty was the oldest living member of Zion U.C.C in New Providence. She was a past president and charter member of Paul R. Strubel VFW Auxiliary Post #8710 and also an active member of the Strasburg Auxiliary to Lancaster General and the Strasburg Heritage Society.
She took pride in her many beautiful flower beds and her vegetable gardens. Betty was an avid Phillies fan, and enjoyed watching the games whenever possible. She also enjoyed reading and word puzzles and often would win against younger generations at them on Thanksgiving Day challenge. She loved to travel to many places including; Australia, Germany, Hawaii as well as to the cabin near State College and the beach home in Ocean City, MD where she could often be found fishing and clamming. Her family will miss her kindness through visits and her delicious meals and baked goods. She would often share her kindness by helping supply meals for those in need as well as volunteering with the Quarryville Food Bank. Her memory and strong spirit lives on in those she leaves behind. Funeral Services will be held at Zion U.C.C., 900 Winter Hill Road, Strasburg, PA on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 beginning at 11:30 a.m. There will be a viewing at the church from 10:00 until 11:30 am.
