Keith E. Wittig formerly of Sawmill Road, Strasburg, died Thursday December 7, 2017 at Masonic Village under the care of Hospice from complications of Parkinson Disease. Keith was the life partner of John C. Rintz for over 47 years. Born in Bridgeport, CT he was the son of the late Ralph L. Wittig and the late Anne Holt Wittig. Keith was a member of Mt. Eden Lutheran Church, Quarryville, PA and Longwood Gardens. His hobbies and enjoyments were varied, from enjoying horseback riding in his younger years to having a summer place and boating at Chestnut Point Marina in Perryville, MD. Many trips to friends cabin in Waterville, PA and annual trips to the ocean at Rehoboth Beach, DE. Keith loved working and maintaining things around the property, growing his own vegetables in the garden. A talented artist, he enjoyed his studio in his barn and had at one time had been employed as a display artist for Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia. Most of all, Keith loved and enjoyed all the kids in his extended family. Frank J. Lowery, Jr., 90, of Little Britain Township, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at his home with his sons Tom and John near. He was the husband of the late Lorraine M. (Donovan) Lowery, sharing 50 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2000. Born in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Frank J., Sr. and Anna (Bonagura) Lowery. Frank graduated high school and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business. He worked his way through college as a professional horseback riding instructor at Prospect Park Riding Academy. After college, he worked as a controller at Radio City Music Hall, the Empire State Building, Jamaica, NY, Water Company, and retired from the Chrysler Corporation. H. Joseph Little, 91, of Quarryville, entered into rest at his home on Sunday, December 3, 2017. Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Herman J. and Alpha (Orr) Little. Joe and his wife, Margaret E. “Betty” Little, had celebrated 64 years of marriage in November. Joe graduated from the former Dormont High School in Pittsburgh and went on to graduate from Penn State University with a degree in Animal Husbandry. After moving to Lancaster County in 1958, Joe co-owned and operated the former Willow Glen Farm that was located in Strasburg. In his later years he worked as a Farrier. James O. Sheetz, 73, of Quarryville, PA passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday December 6, 2017 after a 12 yr. battle with Neuroendocrine cancer (NET’s). Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of the late B. Odell and Mary A. (Eshleman) Sheetz. Jim was a loving husband to Trudy (Church) - having celebrated 42 yrs. of marriage in August and a loving father to Fred Gifford (Shanna), Illinois. Jim is survived by two siblings: Beti Grumelli (Ken), Quarryville, William (Liz), North Carolina, along with nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed. Jim was a true folk artist, creating and designing the “Wooden Action Toys” he exhibited at “Heart of Lancaster County”, “Lititz in the Park” and area craft shows annually for 17 years. The many toys and train sets Jim created were also featured by Wendall Woodbury (WGAL) during Christmastime in the1980’s. Jim’s woodcarvings included Old World Santa’s, Angels, Geese and Christmas Ornaments. He had a talent for repairing antiques and religious statues as well. Jim enjoyed the outdoors: hunting, fishing, boating, camping, feeding the many birds that entered his back yard, as well as creating entertainment gadgets for the squirrels. He adopted two Chinese Geese from a neighboring pond, lovingly caring for them until their death. Elwood G. Sampson, 74, formerly of Holtwood, died Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at his home in Willow Street. He is the husband of Margaret Costigan Sampson. Born in Darby, PA he was the son of the late Elwood J. and Elizabeth Sampson. A US Postal Service retiree, he had been employed in fleet management for 30 years. A proud veteran, Elwood served his country in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He was an active member of the Quarryville VFW Post #3575 and the USS Yorktown CV-10 Assn. Elwood E. Barnes, Jr., 70, of Peach Bottom, entered into rest on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at his home. Born in West Chester, he was the son of the late Elwood and L. Jean (Woodward) Barnes. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Arlene E. (Nellessen) Barnes. Elwood was a long-time member of Little Britain Presbyterian Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served 3 tours of duty in Vietnam, where he was exposed to agent orange. He loved old cars, John Deere tractors, oldies music and dump trucks. He was a trucker driver and had driven for Carl Killian Trucking and Anderson Bakery. Doris L. Hassel, 86, of Quarryville, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. She was the loving wife of the late Glenn L. Hassel, sharing 45 years of marriage at the time of his passing in 1993. Born in Parkesburg, Chester County, she was the daughter of the late R. Emmett and Marion R. (Ammon) Powell. Doris was a 1948 graduate of S. Horace Scott High School in Coatesville. She later worked for the Quarryville Post Office as a supervisor, retiring in 1989 with 23 years’ service. Very active in her community, Doris was a member of Memorial Methodist Church of Quarryville, Quarryville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, and Strasburg Senior Citizens. She also was a member of the Buffalo Girls Dance Group and enjoyed dancing with them. In her spare time, Doris would regularly knit and complete word-search puzzles. She also enjoyed going on vacations with her family. C. Dale Phillips, 71 of Lamparter Road, Quarryville, PA passed away at Lancaster General Hospital on Monday, December 4, 2017. He and his wife Rose M. Flaud Phillips celebrated 44 years of marriage. Born in Bart Township, he was the son of the late Burris Z. and Esther A. Stuart Phillips. He was employed as a machine operator by Lapp Lumber for over 50 years. Dale enjoyed hunting, fishing, and tinkering with things, as he was able to fix most anything. Most of all he enjoyed his family and grandchildren. Harry J. McFadden, 76, of Lancaster, went home to heaven peacefully on Dec. 3, 2017, after a two-year battle with cancer. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, until moving to Quarryville in 1972. He had resided in Lancaster since 2001. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis (MacDurmon), daughters: Robin Caffey (Jeff) of Willow Street, Dianne Hershey (Shane) of Shippensburg, and Sandy Turek (David) of Quarryville. Seven grandchildren: Arielle Dunkle (Jonathan), Alec Turek, Leesha Rannels (Luke), Joseph Turek (Rachel), Holly Jaffe (Jordan), and Luke and Paige Hershey. He was preceded in death by a grand daughter Bree Caffey. There are also 5 great grandchildren: Justice Clifford, Cohen and Taryn Scout Dunkle, and Trenton and Adler Rannels. He is also survived by his mother Laura McFadden and a sister, Carol McFadden, both of New Port Richey, FL. Virginia W. Paxson, 94, of Quarryville PA, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017. She was the widow of the late of A. Marvin Paxson who passed away in 2009. Born in West Grove PA, a daughter of the late Sharpless and Sara Edwards Webster. Virginia attended Villanova grade school in Russellville, Oxford High School, and graduated from Millersville College in 1945. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Quarryville, and had played the piano at the church for 35 years. She was also a member of Solanco Senior Center, Farm Women #20 Kirkwood, and Lancaster General Hospital Auxiliary. Virginia had volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the Quarryville Library for 40 years. |
