Wendell Lewis Rockey, Jr., 96, of Quarryville, formerly of Massachusetts, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at his home. He was the beloved husband of Ruth S. (Shaffer) Rockey (formerly Ruth S. Fender), with whom he shared 4 years of marriage. He was also the husband of the late Joy Abigail (Fredericks) Rockey, who passed away in 1962, and the late Gertrude E.M. (Zuelow) Rockey, who passed away in 2011. Born in Joplin, Missouri, he was the son of the late Wendell L. Rockey, Sr., and Margaret A. (Johnston) Rockey. Wendell was a graduate of the New York City Public School System, class of 1940. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1942 – 1946, attaining the rank of Radarman First Class and earning the Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, and European Theatre Ribbon. After attending Gordon College in Boston, and Eastern Baptist College in Pennsylvania, he earned a B.A. in History from Temple University in Philadelphia, graduating in 1951, and then attended Westminster Theological Seminary, earning a Master’s Degree in Divinity, graduating in 1954. Dorothy Hansen, 85, of Quarryville peacefully passed into the arms of her Savior and Lord Jesus on September 14, 2020. Dorothy was the wife of the late Gerald Hansen. Dorothy was a homemaker until her children were older, she worked for San Diego City Schools and later worked at a bingo hall in Pahrump, Nevada. She moved to Pennsylvania in 2012 with her daughter and son-in-law. In her free time, she loved watching baseball, football and ice hockey. She also loved to crochet, read and do plastic canvas. Valerie M. Mattson, 54, of Stively Road, Strasburg, PA died Monday, September 14, 2020 at Lancaster General Hospital. She was the wife of James L. Mattson. Born in Coatesville, PA she was the daughter of John J. and Irene Rose Roberts. A homemaker she had previously owned and operated her own cleaning business. Valerie was a member of the Lancaster Rod and Gun Club. She enjoyed her cats, dog, and especially her grandkids. Going to the beach and attending bike week there was special to her. Melissa Peifer, 52, went to be with Jesus on Thursday, September 10, 2020, after a courageous seven-year battle with cancer. She and her husband, Craig A. Peifer celebrated 31 years of marriage. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Tellie L. Leaman wife of Larry G. Bowman and the late Aaron L. Snader. Melissa adored her husband Craig, her three sons Christian, Luke, Joel, her Momma, her dear extended family, and her many friends and co-workers. Melissa loved Jesus with all her heart! Everywhere she went her light shined for Jesus. A graduate of Conestoga Valley and Messiah College, She was employed by Willow Valley communities since 1987, most recently as Culinary Training and Development supervisor. Marian P. Beatrice Bush, 95, of Oxford, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020 at home. She was the wife of the late Charles W. Bush with whom she shared 65 years of marriage on April 25, 1943. Born in West Grove she was the daughter of the late Robert Jamison and Alta Fiester Pierce. Marian was employed for 25 years with Hewlitt Packard, Avondale. She was a member of the Nottingham Presbyterian Church. Marian enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, gardening and word find puzzles. Her greatest joy was her family Clyde L. Henry, age 88, of Quarryville, PA, passed away at his home on Monday, September 14, 2020.
He was the husband of Jane Coates Henry, with whom he celebrated 69 years of marriage on June 23rd. He was born in Gap, son of the late Frank N. & Ella M. Spotts Henry. He was a member of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church. For most of Clydes working career he was an electrician. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker #414. Benuel E. Lapp, age 11, of 333 Street Road, Oxford, passed away on Monday, September 14, 2020 at home.
He was the son of Daniel E. and Mary K. Esh Lapp with whom he resided. Benuel attended the Old Order Amish Church. George G. Karabetsos, 87, of Holtwood, entered into rest on Saturday, September 12, 2020 at home with his daughter by his side. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Gregory G. and Sarah (Swiderski) Karabetsos. He was the loving husband of Mary E. (Pittman) Karabetsos for over 43 years at the time of her passing in 2019. George was a decorated veteran of the U.S. Airforce and Navy, having won several medals and awards for his service in Vietnam and the Korean Conflict. He loved Steelers football, watching Westerns, traveling and drinking Kessler Whiskey with his friends and family. John R. Garrett, age 65, of Pequea, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 12th at home surrounded by his family after a courageous 3 1/2 year battle with cancer.
He now rests securely in the loving arms of his Savior. He was the devoted husband of Charlene “Charlie” (Booth) Garrett, having celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary in June. Born in Pequea, he was the loyal son of the late Robert H., Sr. and F. Margaret (Yost) Garrett. Following in his father’s footsteps, he continued to operate the family farm as well as working at Case New Holland until retirement after 44 years of dedicated employment. When not farming or working at CNH, he enjoyed spending time in the mountains at the family cabin in Juniata County.He also loved teaching the younger generations family traditions like butchering, hunting, smelling for water and farming. He could roast delicious pigs, throw wicked horse shoes, and break as well as fix any and all farm equipment. He spent most of his retirement relaxing and going for gator rides around the family farm. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and being able to spread his knowledge and share his experiences with everyone who he encountered. It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our mother, Margaret (Margie) Sampson on September 12, 2020 at the age of 74. Margaret (Margie) Sampson (Costigan) was born on January 1, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA to the late John and Theresa Costigan. Wife of the late Elwood G. Sampson for 48 years. She is survived by her three daughters: Margaret Mary Konopa (Matthew), Denise Ann Sampson, and Theresa Marie Weaver (Thomas), her sister Mary Anna Erb (John), ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her siblings; Theresa (Leon), John, James and William. |
