Vernon R. Umble, age 90, formerly of White Oak Road, Christiana, passed away at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community on Monday, August 14, 2023. He was the husband of Mildred Landes Umble, with whom he would have celebrated 70 years together on December 12th. He was born in Gap, son of the late Edgar C. & Susan P. Smoker Umble. He was a member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church of Atglen. Vernon was a farmer and then in retirement he provided transportation to the Amish Community. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening, tending his fruit tree orchard and most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. Marvin S. “Marv” Stoner, 79, of Quarryville, passed away on Sunday, August 13, 2023 while under the care of Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. He was the loving husband of the late Amelia R. “Meme” (Raub) Stoner, sharing 37 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2016. Born in Lancaster, he was a son of the late Martin S. and Reba E. (Eshleman) Stoner. Marv was a graduate of Solanco High School, class of 1961. He began his career working for his father’s business, Martin Stoner welding, and became an excellent welder and machinist. In 1974 Marv made the decision to become a Sewage Enforcement Officer, a position he held until March of this year, covering 17 townships in Lancaster County. Even though Marv considered it a hobby, he was a well-known gunsmith in Southern Lancaster County. Through his employment and gunsmithing, Marv knew many people and formed many relationships over the span of his lifetime. Jack J Bryson, 88, passed away peacefully at Willow Valley Community, Lancaster on August 12, 2023. Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late William and Kathryn (Beck) Bryson. He was a 1951 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, Annville and received his M.B.A. from Fairleigh Dickenson University in 1964. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. Jack retired from Allied Signal, Teterboro, NJ after 35 years of service. He was a treasurer for the Hawthorne, NJ Little League Football and Little Baseball. As a former member of the West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood, NJ, he was active in the Hillside Players. Barbara E. Witmer, 89, of Fieldcrest Drive, Willow Street, PA died on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at Newport Meadows Nursing Facility. She was the wife of the late Paul R. Witmer who died August 7, 2005. Born in Elkton, MD she was the daughter of the late Christian and Sarah Elizabeth Miller Zeitler. A homemaker, she assisted on the family farm known as Country Star Farm. She was an active member of Boehm's United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served as trustee and the worship committee. Dorothy R. “Dottie” Graham, age 83 of Smoketown, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community. She was the wife of Clair W. Graham with whom she celebrated 66 years of marriage. Born in New Holland, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Margaret Spencer Hammond. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster. In her free time, Dottie loved floral arranging and gardening, painting, and decorating her home. Andrew D. Nolt, age 49, of Kirkwood, passed away at the Mt. Joy Hospice Center on Friday, August 11, 2023. He was the companion of Shelley L. Mowery, with whom he resided. He was born in Lancaster, son of Shirley Denlinger Nolt of Paradise and the late David L. Nolt. He worked for Andrews Excavating of Willow Street. He graduated from Pequea Valley High School class of 1993. He enjoyed going to the mountains and was mechanically inclined and enjoyed fixing things. Janet M. Blevins, 91, of 6 Dennis Drive, New Providence, died Thursday, August 10, 2023 at Newport Meadows, Christiana. Her husband of 63 years, Robert G. Blevins, preceded her in death in 2015. Born in Lancaster she was the daughter of the late Freeman and Myrtle Doulin. Janet was a stay-at-home mom, raising five children, devoting her life to loving, praying, and caring for them and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She formerly attended Smithville Church of God and more recently High View Church of God. Janet was an excellent cook and baker. She loved watching her sons play church softball, attending sporting events of her grandchildren, playing games with her 3 generations of family, and spending time at the cabin in Potter County. Ann D. Shimp, 80, of New Providence, passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital.
Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Harry S. Jr. and Eleanor C. (Denlinger) McComsey. Ann attended Lampeter-Strasburg schools and Lancaster General School of Nursing, where she earned an LPN degree. During her working career, Ann worked as a nurse and performed in-home nursing care. She also worked for Schick, was a store manager for Mays Department Store, and, most recently, she performed administrative and payroll duties for G.R. Mitchell, retiring with 27 ½ years of service. Known for her care and kindness, Ann loved to help people and to take care of animals. She never turned away a person in need or a stray animal that needed help. Ann was a strong advocate for and deeply loved her family and was a wonderful grandmother to her grandson, Josiah. She will be greatly missed by friends and family alike, but is now reunited with other family members in heaven. Douglas R. Straley, 65, of Mount Joy, PA passed away at Lancaster General Hospital on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Kay Straley of Lancaster and the late Ronald V. Straley. Doug had been employed by the County of Lancaster. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed going to the family cabin for hunting, reading, and sharing his love of nature with his family. Doug proudly served his country in the US Army. Surviving beside his mother are his companion Pauline Mowry; 3 children, Rikki L. Straley, Joshua D. Straley (Kailey); Paige E. Straley (Jared), 5 grandchildren; 3 siblings, Connie Kiser (Brad), Stephen Straley (Susan), Jennifer Rohrer (Dwight). Alberta J. “Bertie” Fisher, 80, of New Providence, formerly of Peach Bottom, passed on to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, August 7, 2023, at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She was the beloved wife of Carl Phil Fisher, with whom she shared 56 years of marriage. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Alberta Ruth (Felser) Harnish. Bertie was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, class of 1962. She began her working career with Hamilton Watch and transitioned over the years to Bulova Technologies and, most recently, L3 Communications, where she retired with over 40 years of service. In her high school years, Bertie was a good athlete and a good swimmer, and in her later years she still enjoyed going to the pool and going for walks. For leisure, Bertie enjoyed assembling puzzles and was known for putting the pieces together quickly. |
