Judy E. Thayer of Kirkwood died on Friday, July 11, 2014. She was 58. Mrs. Thayer was born in Englewood, N.J., a daughter of Robert N. Erickson of West Chester and the late Eileen Hansel Erickson. She loved horses and was a freelance riding instructor. Mrs. Thayer was the chairperson of USET Area #2 for several years. She also volunteered in the equestrian community, including at Fair Hill International and the U.S. Pony Club. In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband of 32 years, Edward D. Thayer; her brother, Robert N., husband of Betty Erickson of Coatesville; her sister, Joann, wife of Ross Fritz of Westtown; and three nephews. Services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Fair Hill International, 378 Fair Hill Dr., Elkton MD 21921. Arrangements were made through Dewald Funeral and Cremation Services, Quarryville. Phillip Wayne Martin of Little Britain died Thursday evening, July 10, 2014, following an accident at the family's home. He was five years old. Phillip was born in Georgetown, a son of Thomas and Lena Peters Martin. He enjoyed attending Wrightsdale Baptist Church and the fun things five-year-olds like to do. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Haley Christine Martin; his brother, Colby Michael Martin; and his grandparents, Abe and Elizabeth Peters and Mervin and Laura Martin. Gertrude Wilhelmina Lang of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement community died at Lancaster General Hospital on Wednesday, July 9, 2014. She was 93.
Mrs. Lang was born in Leverkusen, Germany, a daughter of the late Wilhelm and Gertrud Geborene-Gierling Gross. She lived in Millersville and Union, N.J., before moving to the retirement community. Janet Trout Melanson, 89, formerly of Lincoln University, PA died July 3, 2014 in Loveland, CO. She was the wife of Laurence Melanson. Born on May 4, 1925 in West Willow, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Edith E. McClune Mowrer. Janet is survived by her children, Janie (Ted) Bogan, Jr. of Chesapeake, VA, Joseph Trout, Jr. of Memphis, TN, Joyce (Marty) Bagnall of Coatesville, Joanne Johnson of Creston, NC, John (Marcy) Melanson of Austin, TX, Paul (Sherie) Melanson of Boulder, CO, Mary (Gary) Edelmeier of Berthoud, CO; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Arlene (Maris) Trout of Quarryville, and Lois Herr of Kirkwood. Nancy J. Cook, 78, of Holtwood, PA, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014, at Harrison House Nursing Home, Christiana, PA. She was the wife of Newton Cook. Nancy had retired as an inspector from the former Bulova Technologies, Lancaster, PA. She was born in Lancaster County, a daughter of the late Ira and Annie Rineer Rinier. Nancy E. Lampe Traum of Kirkwood died unexpectedly at home in Kirkwood on Thursday, July 3, 2014. She was 65. Mrs. Traum was born in Delaware County, a daughter of the late Anna Hopson Lampe. She lived in Delaware County before moving to Kirkwood. She worked in the Ridley School District as a special education aide for more than 28 years. Stanley E. Kreider of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community died on Friday, July 4, 2014. He was 92. Mr. Kreider was a son of the late Harry E. and Emma Pfautz Kreider. He lived in East Drumore Township before moving to the retirement community. He was a graduate of Drumore High School and farmed at Drumore Center until he and his wife retired to live in Mechanic Grove. Mary Adams of Oxford died on Monday, June 30, 2014. She was 91.
Mrs. Adams was graduated from Oxford High School in 1941 and worked as a secretary in the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., during World War II. Following the war, she worked as a secretary at Bainbridge Naval Training Center, Port Deposit, Md., and the Perry Point VA Medical Center. After raising the family's children, she worked as a secretary at Lincoln University for 22 years. Gary D. Roland Jr. died at Lancaster General Hospital on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. He was 34.
