Ivan B. Pugh, 35, of West State Street, Quarryville, PA died Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Quarryville, he was the son and step son of Rebecca Ann Webb and Alan Hemric of Quarryville, PA and the son of John Edward Pugh of DE.
Ivan loved working with his hands and was employed as a landscaper with Eshelman Mill Gardens and Landscapes, Willow Street, PA. Surviving beside his mother, step father, and father is a son Cain Blake and a sister Dottie (Robert) Noyes. Mary Jane Rinier, 85, of Willow Street, was called home to the Lord on Thursday, May 10, 2018, at her home. Born in Colerain Township, she was the daughter of the late Clyde H. and Viola S. (Myers) Hagens. Mary was employed by Super Shoes, Lancaster, for 15 years. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, serving as Steward of the Quarryville Post for 15 years. For leisure, Mary was a gardener, having brightly colored flower gardens. She also enjoyed travelling, embroidering, and cardinals. Mary had a love for canning fruits and vegetables which were enjoyed by her family for many years. She was a member of the Willow Street Baptist Church, where she enjoyed helping with community dinners and children’s vacation Bible School. Janet M. Hassler, 93, of Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community and formerly Quincy, MA, entered into rest on May 8, 2018. Born in Lancaster County, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Elsie K. (Fritz) Hassler. After graduating from high school, Janet went on to Boston University and received her degree in Education in 1949. She taught 4th grade in the Quincy public school system until her retirement in 1990. She also taught 1 year in Germany, in the U.S. Army Air Corps and volunteered for the Women’s Auxiliary at the former Quincy City Hospital. Janet was a 50 year member of Bethany Congregational Church in Quincy before moving to Lancaster County in 2010 and joining St. Paul’s Church in Quarryville. She was a life member of Robert Fulton Eastern Star #446. Shirley Y. Rhoades, 79, of Quarryville, entered into rest on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family. Born in New Providence, she was the daughter of the late Edgar W. and Theresa (Rittenhouse) Frank. She and her husband, Charlie R. Rhoades, had celebrated 61 years of marriage in January. Shirley worked and retired from the Buck Company. Also she, along with her husband Charlie, owned and operated the former Quarryville Bowling Alley. Shirley and her family were very active in local fast-pitch softball. She could often be seen working in the snack bar at the games. Also, she enjoyed playing Bingo, bowling and supporting the Baltimore Orioles. Shirley’s most cherished times were the ones she would spend with her family. James L. “Jim” Shortlidge, 71, of West Grove, entered into rest on Monday, May 7, 2018. Born in West Grove, he was the son of the late Albert and Helen (Messimer) Shortlidge. Jim graduated from Avon Grove High School, where he had been a stand-out athlete. He retired from Dupont after 40 years of employment. Jim was an avid golfer and also enjoyed horseracing, baseball, and bowling. Jim is survived by 3 children: Karen Shortlidge, wife of Samuel Martin, III of Coatesville; James, Jr. husband of Kerri Shortlidge of Gap; and Bonnie, wife of Charles Mellina of Quarryville. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren: Keryn, Keirstyn, Bella, and Ethan; along with siblings: Alice Osborne, Earl Shortlidge, and Elaine Ticknor. Jim was preceded in death by siblings: Dorothy Paxson, Eva Powers, Albert Shortlidge, Jr., Donald Shortlidge and Betty Shortlidge. Nora L. Lewis, 97, of Willow Street, entered into rest on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at her home. Born in Sulpher Springs, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Rhome and Martha Lyall. She was the wife of the late Roy T. Lewis. Nora had worked as a seamstress of the former Tidy Products in Quarryville. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and spending time with her family. Nora is survived by her son, Charles, husband of Ellen Lewis of Lampeter; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Mary Elizabeth “Dolly” Spence, 93, of Quarryville, entered into rest on April 30, 2018 at the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, where she had been residing. Dolly, as she was lovingly known, was born and raised in New Danville, PA and was the daughter of the late J. Lloyd and Elizabeth (Greider) Harnish. Her husband, Richard C. Spence had passed away in 2006. Dolly attended the former Harmony Hall, a one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from what is now Penn Manor High School and earned an associate’s degree from Elizabethtown College in their secretarial program. Following college, Dolly married and began raising a family. Once her girls were school age, she was employed by the Solanco School District where she was a secretary for several elementary schools. She finished her career as a librarian at Bart-Colerain. After retiring from the school district, she began working at the Quarryville Library. Dolly was thrilled to be a part of the transition from the original location to the brand new facility on Buck Road. She continued working there until her retirement at the age of 88. After her retirement, she continued her work at the library as a volunteer for several more years. It was like a second home to her, and she was well known as the face of the Quarryville Library. Robert J. “Bob” Kolb, Jr., 79, of Peach Bottom, entered into rest on Monday, April 30, 2018 at Lancashire Hall. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late, Robert J. Sr., and Martha A. (Tshudy) Kolb. He was married to Shirley E. (Glass) Kolb for 32 years. Bob was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. He was a partner in R&R Furs and had also worked as a pipefitter and welder with the UA Local 520. Bob served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In addition to his loving wife, Bob is survived by 3 daughters: Patricia Kolb-Harnish of FL; Anita Martin of FL; and Lisa Connor of DE. Also surviving are stepchildren: Michael (Diane) Armstrong, Steven Armstrong, Sheila (Stephen) Armstrong-Bair and Sean (Laurie) Armstrong; 3 grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren, and 10 step great grandchildren. Louise D. Warfel, 81, of Peach Bottom, entered into rest on Monday, April 30, 2018 at home, surrounded by her family. Born in Grayson Co., VA, she was the daughter of the late Charlie P. and Fannie (Kilby) Duvall. Louise attended schools in Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. She was of the Baptist faith since childhood and will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She is survived by sons: John C. “Jack” Warfel and Frankie D. Warfel both of Peach Bottom; along with three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Rudolph, Randall, Robert and Roger Duvall. She was married to the late Harold H. “Jim” Warfel. Louise worked as a colorist for photographic studios (Shelly’s and Peel’s) in Lancaster for 10 years, before teaching and modeling for companies such as Armstrong, RCA, Trojan Boat, PPL, etc. She modeled for local department stores and specialty shops. |
