Leonard S. “Smokey” Stover, 88, of Quarryville, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his 5 children. He was the loving husband of the late Janet A. (Stone) Stover, sharing 56 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2012. Born in New Holland, he was the son of the late Barton S. and Gertrude L. (Weaver) Stover. Leonard was a highly sought-after and skilled heavy equipment operator, and he was a member of the I.U.O.E. Local 542 for over 60 years. Some of the projects he worked on were the Saint Lawrence Seaway, Muddy Run, and pipelines through Blue Marsh Lake and across the Susquehanna River at Clark’s Ferry. He enjoyed riding motorcycles from a young age. He and Janet logged many miles on his Harley-Davidson, travelling locally and across the country. Leonard had a love for horses and raising Appaloosas, owning many throughout the years. He was always very active on his small farm: raising cattle, planting huge gardens, mowing his cedar patch, and cutting wood – which he did until he was called to his final home. Leonard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany. Troy T. Shatley, 77, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017 at home. Born in Chilhowie, VA, he was the son of the late Richard and Hattie Owens Shatley. He was the husband of Naomi Ruth Brack Shatley with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. He was employed with Frezzo Brothers in Avondale as a truck driver. Troy was a member of the Full Gospel Apostolic Church in Kennett Square. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with his family. Marvin Franklin Doulin Jr., 82, of Scalpy Hollow Road, Drumore, PA died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of Bonnie E. Lefever Doulin. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Marvin F. Sr., and Minerva Graham Doulin. Marvin owned and operated Doulin’s Garage in Holtwood for 62 years. His hobbies included fishing on his boat in the Delaware Bay, riding his Harley trike, and his Boston Terriers. In his earlier years he was a boy scout and served as a scout master in Rock Springs, MD. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, a former member of the PA Towing Association, and the Lancaster County Automobile Association. Stephen Roka, of Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA died Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at the age of 98. He and his wife Florence R. Bolton Roka celebrated 64 years of marriage. Born in Ajax, WV, he was the son of the late Frigyes “Fritz” and Caroline Barabas Roka. He served his country for four years as a US Navy pilot during World War II followed by 4 years in the reserves. Stephen graduated from Kutztown State Teacher’s College with a BA Degree, and from Columbia University with a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts. He continued to do graduate work at the University of Maryland. Stephen was an art teacher for the Oxford School District for 4 years, after which he was employed by the US Government for 21 years, 18 with the CIA. Following retirement he owned and operated a custom frame and art supply business from 1972-1985. George F. Eager, Jr., 74, of River Road, Drumore died Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the husband of the late E. Marie Mowrer Eager who died December 31, 2014. Born in Lancaster he was the son of the late George F. Sr. and Dorothy Louise Lefever Eager. George was a lifelong plumber, working for Donald Hess Plumbing and then Groff’s Heating, AC and Plumbing, Willow Street. Following retirement he hauled Amish. He was very involved in little league baseball where he coached for 16 years. His other enjoyments were NASCAR, hunting, fishing, and gardening. Mr. Bobby Gene Mast, son of the late Hoy Lee Mast and Elizabeth Pearl (Anderson) Mast, was born on June 24, 1931 in Sugar Grove, North Carolina. He attended public school in Cove Creek and at an early age he professed his faith in Jesus Christ by joining Evergreen Baptist Church in Trade, Tennessee where he was a dedicated member. After moving to Maryland, he attended Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Rising Sun, Maryland. Bobby Mast was united in marriage to Violet Mae Robinson on December 19, 1952. Their union of 64 years, was filled with many blessings including three children. After a 36 year career with the Chrysler Corporation in Newark, Delaware, he retired in 1989. His integrity and devotion to family is recognized and appreciated by those who knew and loved him. Cherished memories include his stories of growing up in the Appalachian Mountains and childhood adventures with his younger brother Jackie. He peacefully departed this life on March 8, 2017 surrounded by family at his home in North East, Maryland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his four brothers William Mast, James Mast, Richard Anderson and Jackie Lee Mast. Margaret C. Jouett, 93, of Peach Bottom, entered into rest on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Hospice and Community Care in Mt Joy. Born in Unionville, PA she was the daughter of the late Silas and Sarah (Fenstermacher) Crossan. Her husband, Fraser D. Jouett died in 2007. Margaret was a 1943 graduate of Unionville High School. She was a life time member of the Unionville Presbyterian Church. A homemaker, she was known for her wonderful vegetable and flower gardens. Margaret enjoyed trips to the beach and spending time with her family. Carol Ann Callahan Glenn, 56, of Nottingham, formerly Glenolden, passed away March 4, 2017 in Berwyn, MD. She was the wife of Mitchell K. Glenn with whom she shared 31 years of marriage. Born in Darby, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Gertrude O’Neill Callahan. Carol owned the Sunoco Gas Station in Oxford where she was the cashier. She received the Business of the year award 2015 from the Oxford Area Civic Association. She enjoyed her beach home and dancing. Carol Jean Temple, 74, of Nottingham, PA, died at home, March 4, 2017.
Carol was born in West Jefferson, NC, a daughter of the late Quincy Rudd Sheets and Blanche Pennington Sheets DeBeneditto. Carol had worked at Buck’s in Rising Sun, MD for 40 years. She had been a member of the Living Stones Church. She Loved reading her Bible and spending time with her family and friends. Arthur Ronald Shissler, 76, of New Providence, PA, passed away March 3, 2017. Ron was the husband of Catherine Ely Shissler. They had celebrated 58 years of marriage. Ron had proudly served as Gunnery Sergeant in the USMC retiring after 22 years, specializing as an aircraft power plant mechanic. Born in Manor Township, PA, a son of Marian Mae Lindeman Shissler, New Providence, PA and the late Arthur William Shissler. Following his military career, he had worked for 10 years as a route manager for Bickles Chips, was employed at Hiram Peoples Fish Hatchery, New Providence, and 10 years at Ferguson and Hasslers, Inc., Quarryville. |
