Harry Wesley “Pappy” Kirk Sr., 73, of Quarryville, PA passed away February 17, 2015, at home. His death was ruled accidental. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and hospice care. Born November 11, 1941 in Fremont PA, Harry was the son of the late Harry S. Kirk and Stella W. (Brown) Kirk. He was the husband of Linda C. (Custer) Kirk for 17 years. Harry attended Oxford High School, Oxford PA, and later graduated from Thaddeus Stevens Trade School with an Electrical Degree in 1961. Harry worked for Refrigeration Control Technology in Reading, PA where he later retired in 1994. Harry was a Birthright Quaker (Eastland Friends Meeting), in his free time Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing, and attending Native American Pow Wows where he was known as “Trapper.” In addition to the outdoors, Harry loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Walter F. Bowman, III, 58, of Christiana, entered into rest on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Hospice and Community Care. Born in Lakewood, OH, he was a son of Dorothy (Hunt) Bowman and the late, Walter F. Bowman, Jr. He was married to Karen P. (McGinley) Bowman for 37 years. Walt worked for the Flying Tigers Air Cargo Company that was based at Philadelphia International Airport. He attended Wesley Church and enjoyed being outdoors. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. One of Walt’s favorite hobbies was keeping a well groomed lawn. Helen M. Glatfelter of Peach Bottom died on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. She was 80. Mrs. Glatfelter was born in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Robert E. Sr. and Kathryn Nixdorf Walton. She enjoyed reading, quilting, crocheting, birdwatching, solving puzzles, baking, spending time with her family, and celebrating Christmas. Mrs. Glatfelter is survived by her children, Diane G. Kinzer of Mountville, Debra G. Bare of Willow Street, Donald G. Glatfelter Jr. of New Providence, Daniel G., husband of Carol Glatfelter of Gettysburg, David G. Glatfelter of York, and Darlene G., wife of David Bare of Quarryville; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Betty Mcukenthaler, Robert Walton Jr., Richard Walton Sr., and Terry Walton. Marjorie C. “Peggy” Groff, 83, of Quarryville PA, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 under the care of hospice. She was the wife of Donald C. Groff. They had celebrated 64 years of marriage on December 25th, 2014. Marjorie was a retired banker, retiring in 1992 after 25 years with the former First Union Bank, Quarryville. Born in Fulton Twp. PA, a daughter of the late Witmer R. and Erma Groff Cameron. She was a member of Mt. Eden Lutheran Church, Quarryville. Peggy enjoyed her Longaberger basket collection, bird watching, visiting flea markets, and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Joan F. Raftovich, 78, of Crystal Drive, Holtwood PA, passed away peacefully at her residence on March 9, 2015. She was the wife of the late Bernard E. Raftovich who died October 23, 2004. Born in Chester PA, she was a daughter of the late George J. and Catharine M. Freimuth Spanier. A homemaker, she enjoyed reading, going to the beach, but her family, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were her greatest joy. Marian K. Holloway, 92, of Peach Bottom, passed away peacefully in Lancaster on March 7, 2015. Born in Fulton Twp. on June 5, 1922, she was the youngest daughter of the late William J. and Eva (Smith) Kirk. Marian was the loving wife of the late Clifford Holloway, Jr. who died in 2013. Marian graduated from the former Fulton High School in 1939 and the former Quarryville High School in 1940. She went on the graduate from Lancaster School of Cosmetology as a licensed beautician in 1941. William D. “Bill” Herr, 92, of West Stanton Road, Quarryville, PA died peacefully at his home on Saturday, March 7, 2015. He and his wife Vera McCrabb Herr celebrated 71 years of marriage. Born in Kirkwood, he was the son of the late John H. and Helen Whiteside Herr. Bill retired in 1984 after 42 years of service from the Safe Harbor Power Plant where he rose from 1st Pumpman to superintendent of operations. His career was interrupted for 2 years by WWII when he was inducted into the US Army, serving in England, France, and Germany with the rank of 1st Sergeant in Company “B” 336th Engineering Combat Battalion being honorably discharged and returning to his career at Safe Harbor. Charlotte M. McCardell of Quarryville died at home on Thursday, February 26, 2015. She was 80. Mrs. McCardell was born in Oxford, a daughter of the late Charles and Mabel Cregger Browning. In her earlier years, she worked as an assistant mail carrier in Peach Bottom. She also worked for Kerr Glass and managed the Hess Station in New Providence.
