Winifred M. Corbett, better known as “Winnie” to those close to her, passed to be with the Lord on March 18, 2016. Born in Wingate, Maryland, on May 11, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Edward Lee and the late Louise Thelma (Turner) Long, Sr. Getting to know Winnie was easy, since she never met a stranger. She was always quick to share a warm smile and a kind word. Winnie had a desire to help others. She had a kind heart, a generous spirit and a strong work ethic: she started volunteering at Union Hospital in Elkton, Maryland. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary there and eventually served as president of the Junior Board. In previous years, before her health began to decline, she had been active in two garden clubs—Country Thyme Garden Club of Rising Sun, and All Season’s Garden Club of North East. Winnie was also involved in the North East Women’s Civic League. In addition to a sunny disposition and an enthusiasm for serving others, Winnie had a fun, light-hearted side that truly shined…no time was this more apparent when she founded Les Grand Dames of Cecil County—a local Cecil County chapter of the ‘Red Hat Society’. As queen mother for her chapter, Winnie and her fellow Red Hatters enjoyed many fun times together. Many people grew to know Winnie in her later years, and how fun she could be. Many people didn’t know the young Winnie, who was a professional roller-skater, who toured preforming acrobats with a skating partner, or the young woman who modeled for the nicer department stores in Salisbury during the 1950’s. Many people didn’t know that Winnie was an accomplished seamstress, a painter, and a woman with a beautiful voice that loved to sing. Winnie also loved to cook, and she was an excellent chef. Winnie loved to read, and travel the world—for she had an adventuresome spirit. However, Winnie’s ultimate passion and focus in life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We will forever miss her loving touch, yet forever be fortified by her tender and everlasting grace.
She is survived by her husband: Leland F. Corbett, Sr.; her children: Leland F. Corbett, Jr. and wife Judi of North East, MD; Brenda Cruse Zaccheria of Haymarket,VA, Susan Corbett Blackwell and husband Channing of Haymarket, VA; six grandchildren: Linda Cruse Pelachick and husband Keith of Haymarket, VA, Melissa Cruse McCallum and husband Pete of Spicewood, TX, Donald R. Cruse, Jr. and wife Cristina of Pasadena, MD, William Corbett Blackwell, Winston Corbett Blackwell and Elizabeth Morgan Corbett Blackwell all of Haymarket, VA; and 6 great grandchildren: Julian, Alexander and Elijah McCallum, Olivia and Ben Pelachick, and Charlie Cruse. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at11:00 am at Crouch Funeral Home, P.A., 127 South Main Street, North East, MD,where the family will receive guests beginning one hour prior to the service.
