Sarah Elizabeth Stubbs, nee Raub, was born on August 29, 1924 and died on June 11, 2016 after a long, full and active life. She was born in Lancaster to Henri E. and Helen Raub, second of eight children. She grew up in Quarryville and on the family farm in New Providence. She was always full of fun and adventure and between teaching young children at The Cattell School in Lancaster and attending nursing school she traveled to Yellowstone National Park one summer where she met her future husband Donald Stubbs from San Diego, CA. They married in Chicago, IL in 1947 while Don finished medical school at Northwestern University and Sarah (known as Sit or Sally to family and friends) gave birth to their children Sara Lee and Stewart. After Don completed his internship they returned to Sarah's home and family where he served his medical residency at Lancaster General Hospital and then established his first medical practice in Windsor, York County, and then in New Providence while Sarah was homemaker and mother and active in local organizations and charities. Don's career took the family to the west coast in 1964 to Lakewood, WA (near Seattle) where he could more readily pursue his love of sailing in which Sarah avidly participated. After their amicable divorce in 1974 Sarah began a twenty year nursing career at Western State Hospital in Lakewood working with those suffering from acute mental illness and with the state's sexual offenders program.
She moved to Seattle at her retirement to be closer to her two children and three grandchildren and began to offer private one on one care to infants who generally remained with her until nursery school. In all, she provided rich, stimulating and affectionate care for 10 children well into her 80s. Sarah died at the age of 91, but actively enjoyed her life until almost the last moment. Her life force was strong and she was always vibrant with fun and mischief. She loved her family, her patients, the babies she cared for and her friends, all of whom will miss her joy and vitality and appetite for life. She is survived by her two children, Sara Caka and Stewart Stubbs, her grandchildren, Selin Caka, Mollie Caka Conbere and Sydney Stubbs, and her great grand children, Matia and Hamilton Caka Conbere, all of Seattle, WA. She is also survived by her sister Joanna Ripple, two brothers, John and Albert Raub of Lancaster County and by many cherished nieces and nephews. She will be interred next to her parents at the Quarryville Cemetery. Comments are closed.
