Richard E. Johnson of Holyrood, Kansas, formerly of Rising Sun, died at home Jan. 18, 2015. He was 77. He was born Oct. 18, 1937 in West Grove, Pa., the son of Samuel H. and Blanche A. Johnson. Mr. Johnson grew up in Rising Sun. He was a resident of Holyrood since 2005, having moved from the farm three miles east of town. He was a farmer and rancher. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Bushton United Methodist Church where he was active on the Administrative Council Board. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 200 Holyrood and Masonic Lodge 146 of Ellsworth.
He served many years on the Ellsworth Co. Draft Board, Ellsworth County Conservation District Board, Valley Township Board, USD 328 School Board, and Ellsworth County Medical Center Board. On August 30, 1958, Richard married Grace Wilkens Johnson in Lorraine, Kansas. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Dan and wife Sherry Johnson of Lorraine, daughters Debbie Deem and husband Tom of Thornton, Col., Patty Child of Valley Center, Kansas; and seven grandchildren, Katelyn Johnson, Alyssa Johnson, Alicia Grover, Samantha Deem, Sydney Deem, Cassidy Child, and Jackson Child. He was preceded in death by his parents and son in law, Andy Child. A memorial service was held Thurs. Jan. 22, 2015, at the Bushton United Methodist Church with a private family burial before the service at the Lorraine Baptist Cemetery.
