Richard D. “Tucker” Mackie of Elkton died October 27, 2013. He was 90. Tucker was born in Warwick on December 30, 1922 to the late Osborne Sentman Mackie & Josephine (Aiken) Mackie. Mr. Mackie graduated from West Nottingham Academy and the University of Delaware. He was a lifelong farmer and he served in the Maryland House of Delegates, Cecil County from 1959-1982.
Mr. Mackie was a founding member of the Democrat Club of Cecil County and the Elk Creeks Preservation Society. He was also a member of the SAR - Sons of the American Revolution, Cecil County Health Planning Committee, member and President of the Cecil County Young Democrats, also on the Board of Directors & a member of the Community Chest. Mr. Mackie was also a charter member of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Campaign Chair of the March of Dimes and the Community Chest. member of the Cecil County Historical Society, Cecil County Hunter’s Association and the Susquehanna State Park Advisory Board from 1983-1984 and 1987-1990. Mr. Mackie was involved in many other state and community wide organizations. Mr. Mackie enjoyed traveling to Scotland and he loved attending the Scottish games at Fair Hill,. He was passionate about Democratic Politics and Land Preservation in Cecil County. He helped initiate the purchase of the duPont Property in Fair Hill for the Natural Resource Management Area. He cherished his time sitting in his backyard enjoying the view above the Little Elk Creek as well as spending time in his vegetable garden. At Christmas time he would always supply friends with oysters from Cambridge,. He is survived by 25 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings; Osborne Mackie, Elizabeth Mackie, Wilhemina Unruh, Eleanor Foltz, Jean Almony, Pauline Strahorn, F. Thomas Mackie, Joseph Mackie, David Mackie and Catherine Mackie and his faithful Chesapeake Bay Retriever “Kirby”. A visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 392 Little Elk Creek Road, Elkton, MD 21921. A service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Rock Presbyterian Church, Corner of Rt. 273 and Rock Church Road, Fair Hill. Burial will follow in Sharps Cemetery, Fair Hill.
