Nellie Cuellas Hipkins of Port Deposit joined her husband, Reverenf George Hipkins, in death on Tuesday, December 13. She was 92. She survived him only by three weeks. Born in Maricao, Puerto Rico, on June 9,1924, the daughter of the late Francisca Casiano Cuellas and Antonio Cuellas. Mrs. Hipkins graduated from the University of Puerto Rice, taught soon there until she moved to Maryville College in Tennessee. Upon completion of her teacher's studies, she taught Spanish at the college until she met her husband and married him. In 1952, they accepted the call to the Port Deposit and Perryville Presbyterian Churches. She taught at Tome Lower School, then Maywood and Bainbridge schools. Deciding to teach her native language, she moved to Rising Sun High School where she taught Spanish until her retirement in 1988. Many former students still recognized her whenever she went out. Besides teaching, she sang in the church and community choirs. She was active with women's guild, Homemakers, and the Water Witch Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of Cecil County Retired Teachers. She took up quilting in her retirement, and made many beautiful quilts for her family. With her husband and children, she traveled all across the US, Puerto Rico, and Europe. Later years saw the couple traveling the world together. Survivors include her four children: Rebecca Guerrero (David), Leonore Froeschle, Walter Hipkins (Bernadette), and Alfred Hipkins (Roberta). Twelve grandchildren and six great-granddaughters. Predeceased by their adopted son Charles Kubler and granddaughter Katrina Froeschle.
Services for George Hipkins were held at West Nottingham Presbyterian Church on December 20. A celebration of their life together will be held sometime after the holidays. Burial of ashes will be at Baker's Cemetery in Harford County. Both of them were dedicated to learning, and have donated their bodies to science. Memorial contributions may be made to The Ray of Hope Mission, 960 Craigtown Road, Port Deposit, 21904; to Perryville Presbyterian Church, 710 Broad Street, Perryville, 21903; or to Clairvaux Farms, 21 Veasey Cove Road, Earleville 21919, or the charity of your choice. These are her wishes for remembering her: "If there should be talk, it should not be about what I did in my life but about what God in His grace equips His people to do. I would want an emphasis on how wonderful it is to have been given the choice to seek God's will, the joy that comes from daily awareness of God's leading on one's life and what an exciting adventure life is when directed by The Prime Mover: God our Father-Creator-Friend."
