James F. "Popeye" Smith of Rising Sun, formerly of Oxford, Pa., died Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at Christiana Hospital, Newark, Del. He was 71. Born in Mountain City, Tenn., he was the son of the late Wade and Emma Tester Smith. Mr. Smith enjoyed hunting, fishing, family gatherings, his Amish friends and gardening. He was always surrounded by his birds, ducks and animals at his home. No one ever left hungry after a visit with Popeye. He loved his family and friends especially his grandchildren in his later years. He is survived by four sons, James H. Smith of Mosheim, Tenn., Scott Heimburger of Champagne, Ill., Ryan Thompson of Rising Sun, and James Charlton of Oxford; five daughters, Daisy Sue Shetron of Lincoln University, Sandra Gorman of Port Deposit, Brenda Roark of Oxford, Amber Kemper of Havre de Grace, and Shyann Knapp of Kennett Square; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Smith of Mountain City; and three sisters, Donna Atwood of Nottingham, Barbara Jean Rodriguez of Mountain City, and Laura Jane Johnson of Oxford.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sat. Dec. 28, at the Edward L. Collins, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc., 86 Pine St., Oxford, Pa., where friends may visit from 9-11 a.m. Burial will be in New London Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Comments are closed.
