James D. Greer, 86, of Oxford passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at home. He was the husband of Esta Karr Greer with whom he shared 60 years of marriage. Born in Oxford, he was the son of the late J. Samuel and Elizabeth Jones Greer. He enjoyed NASCAR, wrestling and his garden. He loved to tell jokes and most of all he loved his family. He is survived by his wife; daughter, Cindy L. Shuler of Conowingo, MD; two grandsons, Scott Shuler of Buffalo, NY and Brian Shuler (Corinne) of Oxford; five sisters, Ora Sturgill of Oxford, Betty Donnelly of Rising Sun, MD, Mabel Watcher of Santa Barbara, CA, Dorothy Buckalew of Vandalia, IL and Margaret Ball of Nottingham. Fannie Lucille Bonham of Elkton died at home Wednesday, August 15, 2018. She was 85. Born in Wytheville, Va. on June 13, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Sarah Jane (Wright) Stroup. Mrs. Bonham worked for Patriotic Fireworks for many years. She enjoyed playing canasta, working puzzles, gardening and watching her hummingbirds. She also liked watching Fox News. Survivors include three children, Freda Marlene Maxwell (James) of Perryville, James G. Bonham (Adeline) of North East, and Sera Lee Hines (Douglas) of Elkton; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. David Meredith McDowell died August 11, 2018. He was 89.
He was born in Calvert on April 21, 1929, to Harry Clayton and Helen England McDowell. Mr. McDowell graduated from Calvert Agricultural High School in 1946 as valedictorian and with honors from Houghton College, Houghton, N.Y. in 1950. While attending Houghton College, he met the love of his life, Lois Ruth Clingen. Mr. McDowell was the second-generation owner and operator of McDowell Plumbing & Heating. Except for his military service during the Korean War period, he worked in the business all his adult life. He truly loved the work that he did and was always grateful for the opportunity to provide service to his friends and neighbors in Cecil County. His hard work and honesty were yet another testament to the fact that he served his Lord in all that he did. Loretta Jane Comegys (Mommom Retta), 73, of North East, Maryland, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, August 11, 2018. She was peacefully at home surrounded by family. She was born a true coal miner’s daughter in War, West Virginia, on November 14, 1944, to Frank and Hazel Buchanan (Pop & Granny). Loretta is survived by her loving husband, Bob Comegys; five children, including Donna Harvey (Harv), Debbie Leflar (Tim), Christine Reiners (Keith), Ron Dawson Jr. (Bernadette), and Buck Comegys (Melanie); five siblings, including Jimmy Buchanan (Judy), Jerry Buchanan (Carol), Gerald Buchanan, Perle Mann (Bill), and Merle Gilbert (Huck); eleven grandchildren, including Tiffany, Courtney, Meghan, Katelyn, Alexis, Savannah, Victoria, Jordan, Madison, Christopher, and Cameron; six great grandchildren, including Baylee, Gabby, Jase, Brennan, Mason, and Everlee; and dozens of special nieces and nephews, as well as her “sis” Flo. She is preceded in death by her two siblings, Bobby Buchanan and Teenie (Nana); her nephew, Billy Mann; and her brother-in-law, Huck Gilbert. Lula I. Pierce, age 96 of Conowingo, MD passed away surrounded by her family on August 8, 2018. She was born on August 3, 1922 in Helen, West Virginia to the late Henry Eastridge and Etta (Roark) Eastridge. Lula was very family oriented and was known for her famous Sunday family dinners. She had a kind heart and made sure to support her family when they needed her the most. Lula took care of her family and her home. In her spare time, she loved to tend to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was a member of Porters Grove Baptist Church and enjoyed church fellowship and reading the Bible. Elsie W.H. Travis, 91 of Rising Sun, MD, formerly of Lumberton, NJ, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 5, 2018. She resided at Calvert Manor Healthcare Center, Rising Sun, MD. Born in Brookline, PA, on August 7, 1926, she was the daughter of the late George Millard and Elsie (Wilson) Hoffmann. She was the wife of the late David Travis who passed in 1977. Mrs. Travis graduated from Grove City College in 1948. She worked for the Board of Christian Ed. of the Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, PA for over 20 years as a file clerk. She is survived by her two children: Andy Travis (Cathy) of North East, MD, Tara Travis of Mt. Holly, NJ; seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. William J. Killough, Sr., 78, of Grasonville passed away on Monday, July 30, 2018 at UMSMC at Easton. He was born in Albany, NY on September 22, 1939 and was a son of the late Durwood and Anne Maroney Killough.
Mr. Killough received his bachelor’s degree from Wilmington College in Criminal Justice. He retired as a Sergeant from the Maryland State Police and was the former Sheriff for the Cecil County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Killough served in the U.S. Navy. He was married to Doris Killough who passed away in 2015. He enjoyed boating, traveling and spending time with his friends. Mr. Killough was a member of the Maryland State Police Troopers Alumni Association and the American Legion Post 194 in Rising Sun, MD. Edwin J. Sprague, 80 of North East, MD, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018 at home. Born in Philadelphia, PA, on October 11, 1937, he was the son of the late Edwin A. and Elizabeth (Boccius) Sprague. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps. In 1986, Edwin opened the E.J. Sprague Co., Elkton, MD. He had previously worked in management at General Electric and in sales for various companies. A member of Elkton UM Church, he enjoyed talking about Jesus and spreading the word of God. He was also a member of the North East River Yacht Club and enjoyed model trains, boating, swimming and football. C. Paul Nickle, 88 of West Grove, PA, passed away suddenly at home on August 2, 2018. Paul just last week was given a clean bill of health by his oncologist. So we are fairly certain he died of a broken heart as he had been mourning the loss of the love of his life, Alta, since February. Paul was born December 12, 1929, to Alice and Wilbur Nickle in Elkton, MD. He grew up in Cecil County and joined the North East Volunteer Fire Company at the age of 15. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living member of the fire company. Paul graduated from North East High School and began his career as an electrician. He soon married Betty Jane Pickell and together they had six children. Paul eventually started C. Paul Nickle, Inc. and with the help of his brother John and best friend Richard Owens, built it into a first class electrical contracting company, at one time providing jobs for over 150 people. He enjoyed duck hunting and deep sea fishing; he especially enjoyed taking others out fishing. Whether at the monthly Optimist’s Club meeting (he was a member), or at home with friends, Paul could often be found with a cigar and a glass of fine scotch. He had to give up cigars and most of the scotch for health reasons. George G. Fry of Conowingo, died Tuesday, July 31, 2018 in Union Hospital of Cecil County, Elkton. He was 93.
Born August 30, 1924 in Lancaster County, Pa., he was the son of the late George H. and Attie Steele Fry. Mr. Fry is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Hill Fry of Conowingo; and son, Mark G. Fry of Holtwood, Pa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict. |
