Elizabeth Ann( Betty) Brand passed away on March 12, 2018 in Socorro, New Mexico at the age of 96. An only child, she was born on January 5, 1922 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Clarence Hofer Smythe and Hilda(Polly) Archer Smythe, who later resided in Erie, Pennsylvania. She attended schools in Pittsburgh and several colleges including Westminster( in New Wilmington, Pa.) and Villa Maria( now Gannon University-Erie, Pa). She also completed a two year course in ' Pyscho and Analytical Pyscotherapy' sponsored by Syracuse University and the Onondaga Pastoral Counseling Service of Syracuse, New York. A devout Christian, Betty did crisis and pastoral counseling for several years. She wrote a program called 'Cope' which was offered free of charge to caregivers of the handicapped and elderly. In 1992 she established ' Good Shepherd' , her own personal ministry, which worked with Native Americans, and the Patchwork Puppet Theatre, a fifteen member adult group that performed for church's, schools, and community organizations. She also served on advisory boards for the Salvation Army, Mental Health Hospice and Operation Overcome while living in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. Betty was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, the National League of American Penwomen, and The Episcopal Carmel of St. Teresa. Until retirement she wrote feature stories for the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, the Syracuse Herald American and the Harrisburg Patriot News. Sharon Jane Bean, 78, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2018 at Calvert Manor in Rising Sun. Sharon was born in Wadena, Minnesota on March 3, 1940, to the late Herbert and Hilda Opsal Holscher. She is survived by her siblings Janice Brockway, Michael Holscher, Marilyn Louden and Donald Holscher; her daughter Diane Thisell and husband John, her beloved grandchildren, Samantha Collman and Robert Moreland (Heather), and son Tim. Sharon served several years in the United States Air Force as a dietician. After moving to Elkton she was the dietician at Union Hospital and eventually worked as a health care facility surveyor for the State of Maryland. Dorothy Mae “Dottie” Stanley of North East died Sunday, March 11, 2018. She was 69.
Mrs. Stanley was a homemaker who was born in Whiteford, on December 9, 1948. Dorian Vincent Rasnake, 31 of Elkton, MD passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday March 11 2018 at his home. Dorian was born in Newark, DE on February 20, 1987 to Kenneth and MaryAnne Rasnake. Dorian proudly served as a Communications Specialist in the U.S. Army and was best known for his infectious laugh, joking manner, compassion through actions, and big heart. He actively participated in wrestling and football while attending Rising Sun High School. He also participated in The Boy Scouts throughout childhood and into his adolescent years. Dorian was devoted husband, father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and loved attending games. Dorian enjoyed attending concerts, paintball, fishing and boating, dancing, cooking, and helping friends and family. Dorian has passed his love for wrestling, active sports, and hobbies onto his son. He was an HVAC Technician with City Facilities Management and was previously employed with Hollywood Casino in Perryville, MD and Elkton Homes in Elkton, MD. James Ray Slauch, 81, of Oxford passed away Friday, March 9, 2018 at Jennersville Regional Hospital, West Grove.
Born in Lincoln University, PA he was the son of the late Samuel Spencer and Margaret Sims Slauch. A lifetime resident of Oxford, Ray retired from Asplundh and the Nottingham Park. He was a member of the Ocklokonee Tribe #212 Improved Order of Redmen for over 60 years and a former member of the Union Fire Co. #1 both of Oxford. He is survived by a brother, Robert Slauch of Oxford; two sisters, Doris E. Slauch of Rising Sun, MD and Anna S. Ross of Oxford; and nieces and nephews. Albertha May Smythe, 82 of North East, MD, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2018 at home surrounded by her loving and caring family. Born in North East, MD, on August 7, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Albertha (Hines) Meekins. Albertha, a homemaker, is survived by five daughters: Pamela Ray of North East, MD, Janelle Smythe of Parsons, KS, Pixie Smythe-Maes of North East, MD, Wendy Tippett of Rising Sun, MD and Terri Smythe Greer of North East, MD; and son: Nathaniel Smythe of Rising Sun, MD; also survived by 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. Tammy Lee Waddell, 38 of New Castle, DE, died Friday, March 9, 2018 at home.
She was born in Elkton, MD, on May 28, 1979. Tammy worked in the home cleaning industry. Survivors include her fiancé: Robert Burke of New Castle, DE; her father: Edward T. Waddell of Rising Sun, MD; a sister: Crystal Waddell of North East, MD; and two nephews: Bryan and Quinton Bell. Lois B. Porter, 73, of New Providence, formerly of Oxford, passed away on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Mt. Joy Hospice, Lancaster.
She was the wife of William H. Porter with whom she shared 51 years of marriage. Born in West Grove, she was the daughter of the late Leonard G. and Jennie Phillips Brown. Lois was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rising Sun, MD. She graduated from Oxford Area High School and West Chester School of Nursing. Lois retired from Jennersville Regional Hospital, West Grove and also was employed as a nurse for the late Dr. Guy Holcombe, Oxford. Lois was the life of the party and enjoyed visiting with friends, going out to eat, reading and Gospel music. Richard Hamilton "Kip" Ward died a Friday, February 16, 2018 at Union Hospital in Elkton. He was 69. He was born on March 13, 1948 in Woodbury New Jersey, to Herbert Hamilton Ward and Kathryn Summerill Ward, and was the second of five children. With his father serving in the Navy, Mr. Ward and his family traveled both in the states and abroad. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a soccer scholarship and received a degree in "Creative Writing, Religion and Art," created especially for him. After graduation, Mr. Ward worked in the Athletic Department at UNC, promoting the non-revenue sports at Carolina – Kip was a Tar Heel through and through. He co-founded in 1972, along with Victoria Brawley, Rainbow Soccer a recreational soccer league that is still in operation today. The friendship and bonds formed at Rainbow endure. In his Rainbow world, you didn’t keep score, everyone was a winner and what was important was being in the game. In the 70s, Mr. Ward directed the Rainbow Soccer Camp, an instructional summer camp in which college athletes and experienced players taught “the beautiful game’’ to youth. Edna Lee Stike of Rising Sun died Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at All Care Assisted Living, Port Deposit. She was 91. Mrs. Stike was born in Floyd, Va. on May 8, 1926, to Hobart Guthrie and Clara Lawson, with her stepfather, Jesse Lawson becoming a part of her life as a child. She was educated in Cecil County and had an extensive work history, working during World War II making gas masks at Edgewood Arsenal, Discount and Credit Corp in Wilmington, Del., and retiring after 26 years serving the veterans at Perry Point VA Medical Center in the Patient Funds Department. She was very involved with her family, and adored her grand and great grandchildren. Mrs. Stike was a member of Perryville Baptist Church. |
